People communicate to express their needs, feelings, emotions, pain and opinions. Also to have the ability to form positive relationships and be loved and accepted within society and be able to achieve and develop to one’s full potential. Within my childcare setting we communicate to:
* To ensure the safety of the child.
* Information between parents, teachers and staff is important because it informs everyone what is going and should be happening to stop trouble and to know what we are expected to do as staff.
* We are role models
* To promote an acceptable way of communication.
2 .Explain how effective communication affects all aspects of own work. Effective communication is key for developing relationships with others within your work setting which helps maintain a positive learning environment that benefits pupils, parents and staff. When working as part of a team you will need to have good communication so you will need to be able to get on with other members of staff and support others. Positive work relationships lead to a pleasant, comfortable atmosphere in the working environment. This is good for staff and children because your working environment is the child’s play and learning space. When positive relationships are formed it’s easier for colleagues to give and receive trust, support, help, advice, information and encouragement. Any problems arising between colleagues can then be positively approached and resolved, it’s also more likely that skills and knowledge will be shared. Good teamwork depends on good communication.

3. Explain why it is important to observe an individual’s reactions when communicating with them. The individual may not be able to respond while communicating except for their body language, gestures or expressions so it’s important to view the child’s reactions because only about 70-80% of communication is verbal, so if we are not paying attention to that child’s facial and bodily reactions then we will miss out on a large part of communication. A child’s reactions tell us a lot about how they are feeling on a day to day basis and how they react to your communication.
Studying their responses can help discover their likes and dislikes and improve your relationship and knowledge of the child. Speech may not be possible or easy for a child, they may be unable to express themselves, hearing or visual impairment, these are just some of the reasons why observation of facial or bodily reactions are constantly needed to understand a child’s individual needs and avoid causing any form of distress that may cause a physical reaction which could put staff in danger.
