It is in fact less common to come across a book you are not allowed to read and when you do come across a censored book it’s usually banned or challenged by a school. This raises. the question; what motivates governments and schools to censor books? Especially fascinating books such as The Great Gatsby, The Diary of a Young Girl, and To Kill a Mockingbird. In the summer of 1924 F.
Scott Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby, an enchanting novel about the disillusions of America after war and the immoral ways of a society obsessed with wealth and status. This novel ventures into the controversial aspects of cheating, violence and drugs. The Baptist College in Charleston, SC challenged this book in 1987 due to bad language and sexual references. This may have been to shield the students of the Baptist College from immoral messages this novel may portray. Reasons like this were very common when governments or schools wanted to censor books.
Young Anne Frank left her diary and her heart when she passed away in June 1945. Her surviving father then edited the diary. This version then became well-known around the world as The Diary of a Young Girl; the heartwarming story of a girl during the Holocaust and her experiences while hiding in the Secret Annex. This story explores forbidden love, hatred and jealousy among the two families living together. It is very surprising that they weren’t worried about references to the Holocaust. This shows what motivates governments and schools. may not be what you expect. To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee is a charming novel about two young siblings and their journey through childhood while trying to understand racism. The very controversial topics of prejudice, violence and hypocrisy are thoroughly discussed in this book as well as injustice due to racism and deceit. This book was banned in various parts of the United States of America due to racial slurs, profanity and blunt dialogue about ape. The novel may have been banned by the United States of America to shield their residents from their racist past at the time, as especially in the late twentieth century the United States of America were trying to madly amend there racist past. Although it would seem a lot better if the government or school didn’t ban the book as it in fact in a very indirect way teaches you equality. The quote “kill as many blue jays as you want, if you can hit’em but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird”, demonstrates that it is unfair to harm an innocent thing.
In this quote the mockingbird symbolises Tom Robinson an innocent man charged of rape who is prosecuted based purely on his skin colour. Banning books in order to hide or fix a certain part in a government or school’s past is another reason they may choose to ban a book. This leads us to an answer to the question; what motivates schools and governments to censor books? Majority of the time a book is banned due to inappropriate or harmful themes. Religious schools or groups may regard certain books immoral or against their beliefs.
Lastly, schools and governments could ban particular books because the convey bad messages about the school or government such as hard times which they are trying to amend. All of these reasons listed above regarding what motivates governments and schools to ban books is legitimate and acceptable, however sometimes reasons can be completely unreasonable or unrealistic. Taking the above reasons into consideration we can finally conclude that we can’t actually get a specific answer as it depends on the novel as well as the school or government.

There is a law about inflicting pain on others, and it is there for a reason. This is because it degrades the person being hit, it makes them feel lesser, more inferior than the person that is hitting them. If you go up to ...
