Being good at not only Chinese traditional art ¨C Calligraphy and Chinese realistic painting, but also some instruments like piano, I never chose them as a professional. Why, you may wonder? Intellectually, I love something more sacred ¨C natural science. I had not decided to study Biology until I finished my high school. I had a beautiful and amiable teacher in my biology class. I think it might be the course that I learned best among all the subjects. From carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, to functions of tissues of plants and animals, I’ve learned something that I’ve never known before, not only the knowledge, but also the way of thinking of life that I’ve never known life can be as complex as that.
Nourishing my dreaming of becoming proficient in biology, I was accepted by national education base of life science and biotechnology in Northwest A&F University, which is the authority on Agriculture and Forestry in China. Not like other normal four-year college system, we run for three years instead, because we will go directly to postgraduate phrase in our school after three years college education, which you can call it accelerating program.
A beautiful and quiet campus provides me a good surrounding for being concentrated on my study and research. I’ve learned that learning knowledge from books is not the only purpose I¡¯m being to school, since I also learned how to be a qualified human being. I¡¯d love to thank people who have been always encouraging and inspiring me materially and spiritually. I had a good friend, getting his PhD on theoretical physics in California Institute of Technology, who made me know that there are some other things to pursue other than fortune and fame ¨C the belief in science. I¡¯m always fascinated by Nobel Prize winners and I hope that I can work with them one day to learn more about their acute observation capability and their serious discipline in science. I’ve learned how to be cultured to be a will-be scientist, since not everybody can be. I’ve learned that it¡¯s not easy to be a scientist, since it might take several generations to make even a little progress. With a sophisticated understanding in these areas, I have been well positioned to appreciate the basic theories of bioengineering and biotechnology. In the first year college, I led a group and wrote a commercial project plan on popularizing an improved variety of milk cow for a local biology company, for which our group got paid for 10,000 Yuan (about 1200 USD).

Actually, nothing can be done easily. people live in this world for different purposes and aims. Some live for fortunes, some live for reputations, only little among of people live for their own interests. Someone said, ¡°If ones cannot even go to somewhere they dream about, it will be a great defeat to live in this world once.¡± I’ve always been dreaming about going abroad and receiving further education, surely the best education in the world. People are tempted to live an ease life, owning a family, having a steady job and several friends. But it seems not for me. New concepts are coming to me everyday that I would love to know, which keep me feel tense and self-existence in this world.
I love art ¨C a science of beauty, which is also related to science to some extent. One thing that ties art and science together is that they are both based so much on observation. The ability to look at something visually and then think about the meaning of what you are seeing is crucial as a research scientist or as an artist. I had won lots of prizes on Calligraphy, in which there was one from Japan. I gave touring performances in different parts of China with my piano group when I was even in Primary school. However, I chose to be specialized in biology, which needs an acute ability of inspection and great patience, since I believe it¡¯s something worth doing in all my life. I¡¯m fascinated by the cells in dishes that can transfer DNA from one cell to another. Biochemistry lab is interesting and the highlight part is that what is extracted cannot be seen, like protein, DNA. And whenever I get into the lab, I become energetic and I’m able to stay at lab for 10 hours when we did AAS and HPLC without interruption. On one hand, I am planning a project on edible insects, which is aimed at testing the nutrition standards in order to see if it is appropriate for human to eat. As we know, insects are full of proteins, amino acids and some macronutrients. I can use all methods we’ve learned such as electrophoresis, AAS, protein analysis. On the other hand, I¡¯m really concerned about the current consumption of natural resources, especially fermentation of straw into ethanol, which works to develop cost-effective, environmentally friendly biomass conversion technologies to reduce the dependence on foreign oil, improve our air quality, and support rural economies. I just want to make the world better one day by my own hand.
