My name is Theresa Dauda, I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of Manitoba. I was born and raised in the Sierra Leone. Growing up in Africa I have seen a lot of people in various background and I know how life sometimes can be unpredictable. I have been working in a hospital setting as a lab secretary and I know what it means to be sick, but without the experience to render help to the sick, that I always dream of. For me, nursing is more than just a simple career or job; it’s a privilege that measures our values as human beings. Touching the life of others is a treasure that is immeasurable. I chose nursing because this allows me to interact more with people. Nursing is a very powerful profession, it allows you to influence people and touch their lives. I am very willing to achieve this big responsibility. I believe that there is more into nursing than that simple definition “Caring or Nurture”. Being a nurse is a very influential and rewarding profession.
Nurses care for people through illness, injury, pain, loss, dying, grieving, birth, growth, aging and health. For me caring for others, teaching patients and families, advocating for the most vulnerable of patients and building relationships with patients, families, and other professionals is truly what makes someone or me a nurse. Also the ability to be present with patients and families at the best and the worst of times is what is important to me. Sometimes you don’t have to say a word. Just being there-knowing that it is best not to say anything-listening, holding a patient’s hand, crying and laughing and supporting a family member is what is most meaningful to me as a nurse. My journey to decide if I would be able to handle this career began when I start to work at St Amant a center for sick and disable. Even though it was a causal job but it was rewarding to render myself to others who needed me most, because these are not only sick people for a time but for the rest of their lives.

An amazing experienced that marked my life completely when encountering with patients that had different kind of needs, some sad, others unfortunately not. A place where I experienced many emotions but they all leads to the same path, to show a caring attitude to these patients as much as I can. I had the opportunity to interact with nurses and observe very closely how they approach their tasks at all times. Moreover, my duties while working, was to give proper care and make patients and their families feel as comfortable as possible. I experience strong feelings of accomplishment with self-worth when I touched a person’s life, which brings a satisfying reward to me as a potential nurse. I believe that in becoming a nurse, a person needs more than that desire to succeed. It is essential for a nurse to be open, strong, patience, determine, thoughtful and caring, and be able to communicate with people. These qualities would reflect on the nurse and would make caring for the patient easier.
I believe that I belong to this field because ever since my son was diagnosed with autism, I always wanted to make a positive influence in people’s lives. The main reason for my decision to become a nurse was my son, whom I think was like all other kids out there even not having the same disability but somehow suffering from other diseases that need caring. This does not only extend to kids but as they grow up become adults in life their needs for care will increase. My son and other people around me have inspired me and has giving me the zeal and empathetic heart to care for the sick people whether fortunate ones or less fortunate. I know the feeling of giving yourself to a complete stranger in their greatest times of need is like no other feeling on earth. I truly believe that I am suited to become a nurse.
