Firefighting is a career that can make you feel proud and accomplished, and it is a career in which I have a lot of respect for. In order to be a firefighter you must be in shape, prepared, experienced, and ready to deal with your job emotionally as well as physically. I chose to be a firefighter because I want to be able to help others and make them feel safe to live in their communities. After visiting some actual fire departments, I realized as a firefighter you certainly have a lot to be proud of. It’s not your average job and does require quite a bit of organization to stay on top of everything. Everyday you have to be ready and prepared for just about anything that can happen.
You never know what kinds of jobs you are going to be set out to do in one day. This means your equipment should be in order, checked and ready to go. While going through training, I began to realize this is a career that is can be emotionally overwhelming. You must be able to cope with mental stress, and stay prepared at all times.
Just the fact that you don’t know what you are going to encounter throughout one day can be stressful. Knowing this you must learn how to deal with your emotions, whether it’s through group therapy or just relaxing after work. People are going to depend on you when they ” re in a dangerous situation and you must be strong and help them when they are in need. To help others you must also be physically and mentally prepared.
The physical training I have done has taught me how to deal with stress in many situations. I know I have a long way to go until I am truly ready to be a firefighter. There were a few times when I was just about ready to give up and didn’t think I was able to handle the tasks I was given. Firefighting takes constant training, and there are always new techniques that are being brought into the fire department.

So far in class I’ve had to overcome many fears, such as embarrassment, heights and new ideas I was not used to. The students in class are usually helpful and much of the class is also new to them, which helps in itself not feeling alone. I also enjoyed learning to work in teams and think this has been a good learning experience. Many times how well you do your job can depend on your physical health. If you begin to slack on health you can easily notice a difference on the quickness and efficiency in your work.
You must exercise on a regular basis so you are able to perform the necessary tasks in the most stressful of situations. Not only must you be able to perform these tasks, but also you must be able to endure it for long periods of time. You must learn your weaknesses and your strengths so you are work at your best at all times. Staying in shape can also help your teammates, so you don’t put them in dangerous situations. In the past, most people thought firefighters had a pretty easy career. Much of the time they were off work or just laying back waiting for something to happen.
Firefighters also had early retirement and great benefit packages as well as perks such as gourmet food prepared by wonderful part-time chefs. The firefighter also worked in relative safety compared to the military, police or even truck drivers. I must confess my views were a little different than those held by the public. Many people had no idea what firefighters do and are just starting to find out some aspects that are not as easy as they had thought.
The events of September eleventh have changed all of that! Some three hundred firefighters gave their lives so thousands of people could exit the twin towers. Many other firefighters were also injured in their attempts to save others’ lives. I have seen on TV how these courageous men and women risked their lives, and this was scary for me to think about. Now looking back those courageous people have inspired me to actually become a firefighter. It amazes me how it takes a huge incident for the public to take a step back and see how much firefighters have to go through every day. This course has also taught me that firefighters, even under normal conditions just don’t sit around.

There are usually jobs assigned throughout the fire department, number one making sure all your equipment including your SCBA is ready to go. Many departments assign one person as a chef to cook for them, which many firefighters enjoy because it brings them closer to the people they work with. They have to be organized with everything they do, so nothing is missing and everything is well maintained. Through my Fire Fighting Principles Class I have had my good days and bad days, but overall I like the challenge.
I know that for myself fire fighting is still a well admired career, but through class I have learned this may not be the career for me. Either way, I have learned a lot through this class with organizational skills and also speech skills. I guess it’s hard to say right now that this is what I want for my career, when I’m only seventeen and have not really looked into any other careers. I have also realized that being five feet tall can make some activities a bit more challenging. This is still a career that I have thought about for some time and may still pursue.
Firefighting is not only a career that I admire, but also something that has taught me many valuable lessons. There are aspects that make it exciting and also scary. I am glad I chose to take these courses in becoming a firefighter.
