I was born and raised in a small, under serviced community in Northern, Ontario called Muskoka. As a child I always had an interest in health care. Whether I was reading the oral pathology books of my fathers (a local oral surgeon) or playing doctor with my dolls and my fisher price doctor kit, I was always drawn to medicine and its ability to help people. During my early years in Muskoka I was always encouraged to take a strong interest in the sciences, arts, and the natural world. I not only learned about my environment from living on the “land” but I also spent a substantial part of my life living on a boat on the “water”.
Living aboard and sailing on the water, I found, was actually one of the best classrooms I could have experienced. It truly teaches one to see and view all your everyday experiences from a whole different perspective. It taught me the value of being completely self-sufficient, and required me to rely on my own decision making abilities. It also taught me to live with total respect for the living environment and wildlife around me on both a local and global level. I have learned how fragile and threatened our environment has become. I came to realize that our lives are connected, in every way, to all the elements that make up our planet.
The Essay on Living Environment People Social Women
... are deeply affected by their living environment, social events and experiences. The influence of living environment to people cannot be avoidable. ... someone's personalities and attitudes, we need to observe the living environment, his experience and some large social events besides ... People who are borne and living in big cities ...
Being cognizant of the fragile environment that we live in and how that in turn effects of everyday wellbeing, made me realize the importance being fully aware of context when dealing with individual problems. This was especially emphasized as I grew older and became aware of my mother’s mental health problems. It was not enough just to pathologize my mother as mentally ill; in order to truly understand the nature of her problems and to best help her “feel better” again, the environmental and social contexts that shaped her life needed to be taken into consideration.
I believe my ability to look at things from this vantage point and to take context into consideration will greatly assist me in any field involving human interaction and care. My commitment to caring, my approach to people and my aforementioned interests in the sciences even received recognition at the secondary school level, when I was awarded the “Health, Science, and Nursing” award as well as the “Math, Science, and Engineering” award at commencement. My extracurricular interests also speak to my suitability to Ryerson’s collaborative nursing program. To me, science is tangible, and not an abstract presence in this world.
Just as science is real, so is art. I was also very fortunate while growing up that I was always encouraged to pursue a strong interest in not only the artistry of nature but also in man-made fine arts. These creative outlets were always seen as a means to balance the rigors of my academic pursuits. While an understanding of concrete scientific theory was important, it was equally important to be able to think in a creative, and at times abstract way. This balance has afforded me the skills to approach challenges in a thoughtful, detail oriented and fact based way, without losing sight of the importance of human compassion.
I have invested over twenty years in the art of ballet. Ballet is not just about the artistry of dance, it’s about the balance between years of discipline and repetitive study on one side, and the pure art form of free expression on the other side. This experience has taught me the value of study and discipline, along with how important an emotional connection is between everyone. Pure art is emotion and I believe that helping others requires a deep understanding of how we connect with others at a personal and emotional level, the importance of family, and the value of having a place we call home.
The Essay on Nursing Profession – the Most Important in the Care of the Older Adult
Nursing profession is most important in the care of the older adult. I so much agree on this notion and I believe it is true. The older adult, just like every other individual is a biopsychosocial being and therefore requires care that cuts across every aspect of his life and for this care to be given, it involves many disciplines/profession; but the nursing profession stands as an intermediary ...
These are all important things that are reflected in our health and sense of well-being. Studying art and ballet has taught me a great deal about how people connect with one another. I strongly believe these experiences, though non-academic in nature will serve me well in both the study and practice of nursing. While my personal experiences can be easily applied to nursing, my previous post-secondary studies, alongside my work related experiences and exposure to the practice of medicine, give me the necessary practical skills necessary to be an effective health care provider.
I have vast experience working in a clinical setting. My father is a dental surgeon practicing in an under serviced area in Northern Ontario. Throughout my high school years and post-secondary education, I worked in his practice on a part time basis. I’ve assisted many times in the operatory on after-hour emergency cases and I’ve also assisted on many restorative and surgical procedures in the operatory and also in remote locations. These experiences have taught me that one of the most important connections between a patient and any health care practitioner is a connection of trust.
My hope is that I may, one day, have the privilege of helping others in my community at this level. As time came for me to initially pursue post-secondary education I was still wary about making a decision about what I specifically wanted to do. My closest childhood friend was confidently pursuing a career in nursing as a third generation nurse in her family, she has always inspired me with her career choice. I had interests and curiosities towards nursing and by exploring a career in “Fitness and Health Promotion” I sought to allow myself the time to carefully consider my motivation for following such an incredible career.
I gained additional clinical experience in athletic therapy during my final year studying fitness and health promotion. This experience prompted me to enter into a bachelor program in Athletic Therapy the year following my graduation. Studying AT has allowed me to further explore my interests in fitness and health along with the clinical aspect of working directly with the care, treatment, and rehabilitation of various injuries and conditions.

However, nursing has never been absent from my thoughts, and this combined with a lack of personal fulfillment in the various courses of study I’ve pursued has continually amplified my desire to become a nurse. I take great pleasure in people and their diversity, and by combining my love of science with the interpersonal rewards gained from interacting with them, I hope to fulfill this ambition. I have also come to learn that nurses as well as doctors not only treat people with health problems, but that they can also help people who are otherwise physically healthy. To me, good health starts with the family.
I believe family is the foundation of healthy living. I know that everyone, at some point in their lives, will need support for health related problems and also other related problems that somehow seem to find them. It is my hope that some day, I can use all my life experiences and in addition, become a student of nursing to make a difference in other people’s lives – to help and teach people as a nurse. I would hope that I could eventually nurse in my own community and would also like seek out opportunities to offer my help and services to people in many other regions including South America, the Caribbean, Africa, and the Pacific Islands.
I am not at all interested in obtaining wealth, affluence, title, or accumulating assets and objects throughout my life. I do not want or desire the “dream house” that many others seem to seek. I do not want to travel this world simply as a tourist. I want to make a difference in people’s lives hopefully as a nurse. I want to have a life that has meaning and a higher purpose. From my varied life experiences, I believe I have a strong sense of who I am and where I want to go in the future. I hope you will consider my application to become a student of the Ryerson collaborative nursing program. This is my dream.
