Distinguished Members of the School Board: I am not in favor of the proposed requirement that eighth-graders spend fifteen hours during the school year volunteering to help the elderly. Here are four reasons why I think volunteering to help the elderly is not a good idea. One reason is Health concerns. The elderly may have germs or sickness or maybe they might catch a sickness from us, like the common cold. The human body on average has a good immune system, but as the human body grows older, no matter how much you try to keep it strong it dies down. Thus, you should not be around old people too much.
Another reason why helping is bad is emotional concerns. If you volunteer too much you might grow too attached to the elderly and start to buy them things and spend lots of money on that person. The old person may be cranky and may hurt someone’s feelings. That is because old people have attitude problems. Another reason is finance concerns the elderly are sweet but their sweetness can go a little too far.
They can take advantage of you and basically make you do whatever they want till you get to the point where you get too close to them, buy them things and spend a lot of money on them and especially if they die you would want too help pay for their funeral. It is as if old people have a special mind control on young people. My final reason is physical concerns. Some of the elderly in the world are disfigured. Some elderly are senile or in today’s modern language have Alzheimer disease. Young people may laugh at them and hurt their feelings.
