In the essay, “Why We Crave Horror Movies” by Stephen King the author tries to prove that the modern day horror movie is are relief of violence, are fix of adrenaline and fun, and also something that can dare the nightmare. In a lot of ways these things can be related to real life situations. My relief of violence is playing video games, and my fix of fun and adrenaline is when I play football, and something that dares my nightmare is when I challenge my brother. In the essay, “Why We Crave Horror Movies”, Steven King explains that the modern day horror movie is our relief for violence it is what feeds the gator. He uses horror movies because of there violent nature. We all need to be able to step outside life’s boundaries and certain horror movies can do this for us.
It can let us see things that in normal everyday life cannot be possible. In the essay Steven say’s, “We are told we may allow our emotions a free rein.” (444) Trying to hint that a good horror movie can do this for us. But horror films are not the only thing that can feed the gator. For me it is when I turn on that video game and I can break all the rules of life. I know I can do whatever I want and still have the security of just turning the game off and going back to real life. Playing video games is my outlet to life.
I can take a gun on the game and let out all the frustration of life and not worry about the consequences. But there are many things that can feed gator and for you it may be something the opposite of a horror film or video game. Also in the essay the author explains that the modern day horror movie brings us fun and adrenaline. Depending on the type of horror movie it is, it will bring you both of these things. It will bring you fun just for the fact that you ” re at the movies and it’s going out and usually hanging out wit your friends and it will bring you adrenaline because of the share fact of being scared. Steven King compares the horror movie to a roller coaster saying,” Which is not to say that a really good horror movie may not surprise a scream out of us at some point, the way we may scream when the roller coaster twists through a complete 360…
The Term Paper on Scream Not Your Typical Horror Movie
Marisa Bell Patrick McKercherWriting 110 March 1998 Scream: Not Your Typical Horror Movie Dracula. Frankenstein. Godzilla. These monsters no longer strike fear into the hearts of viewers as they once did. Formerly the villains of the classic 'monster movie,' these relics, who now represent all that is archaic in horror film history, move aside to make room for the newcomers. The monster movie of ...
.” (443).
I get my fun and adrenaline in a different way though, I get it through football. The way I feel on the first play of the game is the same way that one might feel as they first sit down at the horror movie that they been longing to see. I can feel all the blood rushing through my body, and I get excited because I do not know what awaits me, and I do not know what’s around the corner. I can feel the danger of it I know that I can get hurt but yet I push on because I need the adrenaline that it gives me. The same way that one would push on in a horror film they would not get up and just leave they would stay for the excitement and reward, and that is why I stay; for the reward.
I want to know that I concurred my opponent, that I looked at my fear and I faced it. Which is the next thing that Steven King says horror films does for us. As he says, “When we pay our four or five bucks and seat ourselves at tenth-row center in a theatre showing a horror movie we are daring the nightmare.” (443).
As to say that we are challenging are fear, to say yah I beat it I beat the monster. When I watch a horror film I feel unprotected, isolated, and sort of exposed like as if I were open for attack.
When I went to go see “Dawn of the Dead.” A modern day horror film about people being turned into flesh eating zombies and trying to feed on the survivors. I felt all of the emotions that a good horror film can bring. I think we all need to be able to feel like this and still have the protection of knowing that it is only a movie and we can go back to are normal life in society. We as humans cannot go through life always knowing what is around the corner, always doing as what we are told; no one wants to be predictable or dull and that is exactly what a horror film is not. Because not knowing what twist and turns that the film will bring gives us a certain satisfaction.
The Term Paper on Gender In Horror Films Carrie Alien And Amityville Horror
The representation of gender in horror films varies from director to director, writer to writer. However certain characteristics of gender representation do, at times follow a certain theme. Whilst studying the evolution of horror films it struck me that in some cases the film, while appearing to differ only ever so slightly from the novel upon which it was based, would create images onscreen that ...
Films that dare the nightmare are used as a test, to see if you can watch the movie without being scared. To say, “Yah I beat it. ” We can all use a good challenge in are life; for some it is a movie and for others it could be something of the exact opposite. For me it has always been challenging my brothers. Being the youngest in my family I have always got into it with my brothers.
I know that they are bigger and tougher but I still always took there challenge to do what they told me not to do. I can remember when I was younger and my brother told me not to eat the last piece of cake I knew that if I did he would beat me up, but I did it anyway. When it happened I felt the same feelings that one might feel when they sit at a horror film. I did it just to say that I was not afraid of him. He still beat me up but I dared my nightmare I took the test and I survived it.
So in the essay “Why We Crave Horror Movies” the author Steven King does prove that that the modern day horror movie is are relief for violence, and our fun and adrenaline, and that it does dare the nightmare. He proves that it does bring us suspense and lets us brake society’s rules.
