Character Analysis
While I was preparing to write this paper, I wanted a strong definition of what the term “character in drama” meant. I found a few definitions around the internet. Answers.com mentioned this: “Aristotle defines the character in drama as the people represented in the play. He believed the characters qualities should be revealed in a few telling scenes.” Merriam-Webster Dictionary had many definitions for the word “character” but only a few were relevant to “character in drama”:
“b : one of the persons of a drama or novel c : the personality or part which an actor recreates <an actress who can create a character convincingly> d : characterization especially in drama or fiction,”.
While all of these aspects are true, the truth in layman’s terms is that a good character makes drama worth watching. A story just isn’t the same without good characterization. In movies, especially, if the actors aren’t very good, you notice it right away. That’s because a character pulls the story along. The people watching a good character will feel as if they know the character when the show is over.

I tried to keep these thoughts in mind when I chose the characters to write about in this paper. The character I chose to write about from Necessary Targets is J.S. I chose J.S. because I was able to see her character go through a series of events and change her view of life and what is important. In the beginning of the play she seems to be a shallow, materialistic middle aged woman. She seemed almost ineffectual and on the edge of being burned out on her profession. It was even hinted in the very beginning of the play that she was only taking the job in Bosnia because it carried a lot of prestige, since she was appointed by the President to go there.
After J.S. is in Bosnia for a while, though, you see her change. You see her soften towards the group of women and their bonding with her made her heart open up and she was able to find her inner strength to do the job she was appointed to do, which was to be an emotional container for women who had been sexually traumatized and stripped of their homes and identity. The part at the end in her apartment in New York, she was having a sort of “culture shock”, and didn’t seem to know how to go back to her old like because her possessions weren’t that important to her any longer. I found that I did not particularly care for her character in the beginning of the play and that she was my hero at the end.
Part of what made her character really good and how you know that J.S. is changing is through her dialogue with Melissa. Melissa and J.S. characters flip-flopped in a way. I thought Melissa was all about helping the women out in the beginning and J.S. looked like she was in it

for the prestige. Then by the end of the play you see that Melissa is just there to get her book finished and that she has ulterior motives. That was really good writing on Eve Ensler’s part.
When I thought about the character I wanted to pick to write about for Lysistrata, I remembered that it was meant to be a comedy. The character that made me laugh the most was Myhrrine. I really liked the scene where Myhrinne’s husband comes to visit her. I thought at first that she was going to break her oath, but then I realized that she was only playing with him and I thought that was really funny. As a woman you know that withholding is very effective as a tool, but this was extremely dramatic, which made it very good.

That scene also made her a well rounded character morally, because she sacrifices her personal pleasure for respect to the oath and for the good of Greece. This behavior was also unexpected, which made it even better.
The word character is a very broad, generalized term. It means people in stories or plays that push a story forward, but this can take many different forms. Good characterization makes movies more entertaining and books more intriguing and believable. The writer must be careful to create characters that come to life, that is what keeps the audience interested.
