“Woman of the Decade” Juliette Gordon Low Women, often stereotyped as the “weaker sex”, now have something deemed “equal” to its brother organization, the Boy Scouts of America. It is the Girl Scouts. Previously known as the Girl Guides, Juliette Gordon Low is its founder, and the 1910’s “Woman of the Decade.” Juliette Gordon Low is a Savannah, Georgia native. Born on October 31 st, 1860, Juliette Gordon Low is a well-educated woman who has traveled extensively since completing her schooling in New York City and Virginia. She married William Low, an Englishman, in 1886. Mrs.
Low has a steadily intensifying hearing condition. Despite the deterioration and persistent loss of her hearing, she has accomplished great things in her life thus far Juliette Low founded the Girl Guides in 1910 in England. In the years that followed, Girl Guide or Scout programs spread to Australia, South Africa, Finland, Sweden, Poland, Canada, and Denmark. But that wasn’t enough for Juliette Low.
In 1912, the Girl Scouts movement reached America. The first troop meeting in the United States was held in Savannah on March 12 th, 1912. Juliette Low was elected President of the Girl Scouts of America in 1915 and still holds that position today, though she entertains thoughts about retirement. In 1916, Juliette revised the Girl Scout Handbook, previously written by John Hoxie, by adding an aviation badge, which was a great achievement for young girls.

Juliette Low has had a great impact on American society. Women face many discriminating circumstances in which they must triumph. The Girl Scouts of America allows girls be active participants in their communities and partake in activities that were previously suitable for only boys and men. The Girl Scouts contribute to the Great War effort in their neighborhoods because now, more than ever before, women are realizing that they have a critical role in their communities. This organization has helped to bring about more talented women that possess the skills necessary for the jobs left behind by men at war. They have also helped to push this generation of girls today to be stronger, more capable young women.
There have been accusations that Mrs. Low is just trying to stir up trouble by turning innocent little girls into independent, defiant women and that her impact on society is negative. This, however, is not true. America bestowed upon women many rights that they deserve.
Men often think that women are not worthy of these rights. Mrs. Low has simply instilled the possibility of being successful women in the minds of American girls and girls all over the world. Girls and women today need to follow Juliette Low’s example, beginning a chain of events leading to smart, resourceful, modern women. Her impact is indeed positive. Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of the Girl Scouts of America, is truly a deserving recipient of the title “Woman of the Decade.” She has inspired young girls in our society today to be independent and individual women.
She and the many Girl Scout troops have contributed to the war effort, their communities, and society in general.
