As there are no national minimum academic entry requirements for entry into pre-registration midwifery degrees, each higher education institution running courses sets its own criteria, however, higher education institution usually look for a minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above which includes English language or literature and a science subject and or either two or three A levels or an equivalent. Midwifery has many different qualifications which are necessary for the job which consist of degrees, GCSEs, BTEC and NVQs. Also it may consist on how long you have studied for and whether a practitioner needs to be registered. The qualifications that are need for this job are: Five GCSEs at grade 1
NVQ intermediate level plus one GCSE/GCE O level at a grade A-C There are many different qualifications which may be considered broadly equivalent to two A level which include: NVQ advanced level or NVQ level 3
SVQ level 3
EDEXCEL foundation (BTEC) National or higher national diploma OCR Cambridge technical which includes level 4 health and social care Some applicant who has left full time education some time ago may be required to give evidence of successful recent academic study such as a QAA accredited access to higher education course or equivalent. To train to be a midwife you have to take an approved midwifery degree. Alternatively, a qualified nurse can complete a midwifery short programme. Each route leads to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council which allows them to practice as a midwife. These degree and short courses are known as pre-registration programmes. Students are awarded both an academic and a professional qualification, through integrated study of the theory and supervised midwifery practise. Supervised midwifery practice is 50% of the programme and takes place in both community and hospital settings which include antenatal clinics and wards, labour wards, postnatal wards and neonatal care. The programmes are normally three years long and studied fill time.

The duties in this job role are:
Providing sound family planning information and advice.
To prescribe or advise on the examinations necessary for the earliest possible diagnosis of pregnancies at risk. To provide a programme of parenthood preparation and a complete preparation for childbirth including advice on hygiene nutrition. To care and assist the mother during labour and to monitor the foetus in utero by the appropriate clinical and technical means. To conduct spontaneous deliveries including when required an episiotomy and in urgent case, a breech delivery. To recognise the warning signs of abnormality in the mother or infant which necessitate referral to a doctor and to assist the latter where appropriate, in particular the manual removal of the placenta, possibly following a manual examination of the uterus. To examine and care for the new born infant and to take all initiatives which are necessary in case of need and to carry out where necessary immediate resuscitation. To care for and monitor the progress of the mother in the postnatal period and to give all necessary advice to the mother on infant care to enable her to ensure the optimum progress of the new born infant. As a midwife you will be part of a multidisciplinary team liaising with GPs, health visitors and social workers. You will also work alongside the parents and baby. The better you know each other, the more smoothly the birth is likely to go. Dealing with emotionally charged situations
You will have to stay calm and alert in times of stress, and enable women to feel confident and in control. On the rare occasions where something goes wrong, you have to be ready to react quickly and effectively.
