Trinkets and Beads Trinkets and Beads was a film by Christopher Walker that shows the combination of the indigenous societies and the industries that are invading their personal territory. The film shows a particular tribe known as the Huoarani tribe. They are inhabitants of South America and where completely isolated from the rest of the modern western world until missionaries from America came and taught them of medicine and religion which shows exactly how separated from the world they really were. Not until the missionaries where there did anybody in the known world know how much of an oil producing territory it was. Many companies came in to the Huoarani land and started drilling in order to get the oil themselves. Such companies like Shell and Texaco were the first to drill, followed by Canada Petro and then many others just like them.
These companies set up reservations for the tribes, but considering all of the damage and carnage produced the trade seemed less than par. The damage done not only effected the jungle but the inhabitants as well. This went on for many years until the Huoarani leaders decided to do something about it leading protests until a compromise was achieved. Their actions were noble but through the materialism of men they caved ending the negotiations. Not until 1993 did these tribes take the oil companies to court. They have yet to reach a decision but the tribes are still trying to completely regain the land that was once theirs.
Survival is a definite aspect of life and it is sad that cultures have to invade each other in this type of way. Urbanization and billion dollar industries can have a hazardous effect on one thing when the other side pretends that what they are doing has no effect at all. I have known about things like this for many years, but the film itself strikes deep when showing what has and is happening first hand. I have come to respect many cultures as have grown older and see these actions as not only wrong, but sloppy and unorganized.
The Essay on Immediate Effects Of The World War
World War I left many people without the complete families that they use to have. Many people were killed and others suffered severely because the war. In Russia, people were discontent for the lack of supplies the government gave during the war. Thus, revolutionaries grew in mass numbers and later drove the czar power away and set up a new government. This occurred on March 1917, before the war ...
In order for cultures like our own and theirs to coexist in this world more drastic and humane measure must be taken.
