Most of the mistakes made in English by non-native speakers are usually influenced by their first languages. One of the most noticeable mistakes by non-native English speakers is pronunciation of English words in a manner influenced by the phonological rules of their first languages. There is the interference by accent from the mother tongue e.g. “I am living for London in an hour’s time”. This can be made by a person unable to pronounce a high front lax vowel, thus cannot differentiate leaving from living. The use of direct translation from a foreign language into English is evident among the non-native speakers. This may at times give a different meaning to a sentence or render it ambiguous or even meaningless e.g. “I chase a car to work every morning” instead of “I drive a car to work every morning”. Lack of vocabulary is another problem for non-native speakers’ e.g. “I cried for my mother’s death for two weeks”. This should be “I mourned my mother for two weeks”. Non-native speakers also have problems with selection of proper articles to use in sentences. This is the use of “a” instead of “an”,”the” or vis-à-vis.
For an academic writer to meet the client’s expectations he must be an attentive listener. This helps the writer to avoid deviations from the topic.
