Mother Tongue
Mother Tongue, is an essay written by Amy Tan who was born in Oakland, California and grew up in a home where English was a second language. As Amy got older, she would have to translate and speak as her mother when talking to other people. She thought it was embarrassing at times because her mother’s English could come across a little hasty toward people. Amy Tan wrote this essay because she was an English major who loved English, but she also knew that there were differences in her speech at home with her mom than people she would speak too, out of the home. She wanted to know why her language would change, and drastically it would when her mother was around.
I can easily relate to the essay because at my home English is a second language to my parents. Though it wasn’t as noticeable as Amy’s mother, but there were times where I heard my mother have a hard time speaking to people because she could not get her point across. There were times where I had to step in and just say “she means this, not that.” Growing up in a home where English is not the first language to me becomes your first Language because at the home everyone uses it to communicate and show affection with each other, before we head off to school to learn English that we use to speak to the world outside our homes.

Eliminate Bilingual Education One half of United States children who are not proficient in English live in California, a state who's future depends on these three million children becoming fluent in English. She wrote in her essay about an Angel in the house that would tell her to write good things about men and tell her she was just a woman who just needed to look pretty. She later explains that most people may not know what she is talking about; referring to the angel in the house because; at the time Virginia wrote the essay woman had more freedoms by now. They were taken more seriously and could write freely without judgment and their work was looked as equals to a man’s work. From her essay she talks about the way she begins to write, and how she just sits and waits for something to come to mind.
Seems like she would wait for the subconscious mind to send her a picture from the back of her mind, and give her the topic that she needed to write about. What I love about this essay is that there is lots of history, because of what women had to fight for to get where they are now. Its people like Virginia Wolf that led the way on women’s rights by not being afraid of breaking the rules, and thinking outside the box. The angle in the house that she killed was not only for her but for women around the world and now this essay
A Way of Writing
William Stafford was born in Kansas and worked many different jobs like farms and oil refineries, he also spent time in work camps during World War Two (13).
In his essay A Way of Writing, he writes about the how he wakes up in the morning and sits by the window and waits for something to happen. He refers to it, like fishing in a pond which I think that in this state of mind there are no worries about not catching an idea, because the pond is always full. He uses free writing to bring him new ideas, and from that writing it gives him new ideas to keep the pen moving on a paper. What I like about the easy is that William Stafford figured has figured out ways to overcome writers block and was able to keep ideas flowing into the mind and to paper.
It reminds me when track stars begin to learn running for the first time, and when to listen for the starting gun. They are new and need practice, and this what I think William Stafford was trying to say to the readers because he wanted people to have a way to overcome the obstacles of writers block. He is trying to get writers to write freely and to be able to discover the world through writing just as he did. This essay will help in my writing because he writes about first hand experiences and a way of practicing so that you can better yourself as a writer.

The Secret
The Secret is a poem written by Denise Levertov who was born in England, and when she was 12 years old she published her first poetry called, The Double Image in 1940. She edited poetry for the Nation and also for Mother Jones, Levertov died in 1997. In her poem she writes about a two little girls finding the secret of life and then later forgets the secret just to find it over again. What I think she is referring to, when she says that there is a secret that the girls found; is that most children have all kinds of secrets and treasure that they have when we are kids are using their imagination. she says that by a week the two girls have forgotten the secret meaning that that secret they used in there imaginary tale was forgotten and would not be found but then a new secret would come in there next imaginary journey.
She refers to the the secret that only the children can find, and that she admires them, almost by saying that as we grow up we tend to lose our secret to imagination in life due to the busy lives that we have. Then to say that they forget the secret until death finds them, which I think she’s really not referring to death but to say that were not kids forever and enjoy life as much as you can. I really enjoyed this essay because the lines are small but yet they have deep meanings within the lines, it really makes you think outside the box.
