Written Assignment 2 Question 1 The mechanism of action of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and other antidepressants is as follows: inhibition of NE and 5-HT reuptake (TCAs, SSRIs, Newer TCAs); inhibition of MAO enzymes (MAOIs); 5-HT2A and 5-HT2C antagonists (Nefazodone, trazodone, mirtazapine); alteration of NE output (Bupropion); stimulation of 5-HT1A receptors; 2AR antagonists (mirtazapine).
The mechanism of action of SSRIs is as follows: SSRIs inhibit the reuptake of the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT) into the presynaptic cell, and increase the levels of 5-HT within the synaptic cleft. SSRIs are approved for treatment psychiatric disorders, however, there are potential risks and adverse effects that should be taken into consideration, such as apathy, drowsiness or somnolence, anhedonia, mydriasis, changes in sleep and appetite, headache, dizziness, nausea/vomiting, changes in sexual behavior, increased feelings of depression, weight loss/gain, fatigue, etc. Question 2 FAE (neurological impairments affecting a child who has been exposed to alcohol in the womb) also referred to as fetal alcohol effects is a softer diagnosis than fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS).
FAE is diagnosed when a person does not meet all of the necessary criteria for FAS; reports some signs of FAS and when there is a history of alcohol exposure before birth. If an infant is born to a drinking mother without any observable evidence of abnormal development, we cannot conclude that there was no detrimental impact of alcohol during the gestational period, as some effects may develop later.
