The director Kevin Rodney Sullivan captured life within an urban community from the vantage point of a second generation small business owner and his employees as well as other small business owners in the community.
The director used the plot and characters in the movie to display to the audience how people in urban neighborhoods are often affected by gentrification. The more dramatic and action packed scenes are usually shot in the night because people are more vulnerable at this time and is where more “scary” ...
The aim of a comedy film is to illicit laughter from the audience through entertaining stories and characters. Although, the comedy film may take on some serious material, most have a happy ending. Comedies have the tendency to become a hybrid sub-genre because humor can be incorporated into many other genres. Comedies are more likely than other films to fall back on the success and popularity of an individual star. A Dramedy film is a sub- genre that has a dramatic tone, yet has important elements of comedy.
In Dramedy’s, the amount of drama and comedy are almost equally balanced. This balance provides comedic relief for the audience, while still addressing serious issues. Barbershop 2 fits the comedy genre perfectly; the movie definitely has the audience hysterically laughing while simultaneously telling an entertaining story with colorful characters. Next, the context of the movie was captured in the setting which mainly took place in a small family owned barber shop on the south side of Chicago The director did an excellent job of going into the hearts and minds of south side residents and small business owners. In the movie the director engages the audience with a strong focus on the culture in an urban community barber shop. Calvin’s barber shop is a place where men of all ages gather together to be groomed, and discuss various topics. In the barber shop nothings taboo and discussions are often raw and uncensored like in an actual barber shop.
The talk could go on forever, stemming from current events to current romances, and providing free advice on each other’s lives. The setting was realistic and the characters emulated actual people in the urban community. The ideology of the community is being compromised through gentrification. Furthermore, the theme of the movie is the relative value of change. Don D. Scott, the writer who uses morals and family values as a driving force to teach the audience from an ethical point of view that bigger is not always better.
The director engages the audience by showing the how the people within the community are personally affected. In one scene Calvin (Ice Cube) attends a city council meeting and he jokes about being nervous. Calvin then asked the city council “Do you know why Jesus wept? ” The city council president shrugged his shoulders as if to say I don’t know. Calvin proceeds to tell him why Jesus wept. Calvin’s childhood babysitter Miss. Emma who was also, at the city council meeting and the person who taught Calvin passages from the bible growing up.
Sat back and listened to Calvin tell the story of why Jesus wept, you could tell that it touched her heart that Calvin used such a touching story that she had taught him to begin his speech to the city council. The director impacted the audience directly because the audience could feel how proud Miss. Emma was of Calvin and also, how a story that touching pulled at the hearts of the city council members, the residents and most importantly the audience. Calvin then compared the feeling that Jesus had to how he felt when he looked at the elders of the community and how they would be affected by the new development.

How the residents would lose their businesses and some may even lose their homes including Miss. Emma. This scene made the audience feel strong emotion and empathy for the community and the resident’s. Finally, I really enjoyed watching this movie. The plot, setting, characters, actors, directors and writers made the movie enjoyable to watch. It also, showed a different vantage point. It stirred up an emotion inside of me that made me feel like I was there going through the experience with the community. The jokes were hilarious and Cedric the Entertainer did a wonderful job playing the character Eddie.
The whole gang meshed well together which made for an overall good time. I identified with Eves character Terri probably more than any other character in the movie because as a hairstylist I have worked in an all-male barber shop and been the only female. I’ve had to hold my own, be independent, be open enough to relate to the male conversation and turn down a few date offers. I give this movie on a scale of 1 to 10, a solid 8. This movie is a must see and I would definitely recommend this movie to a friend.
