The International Cricket Council’s decision to have World Cup matches played in Zimbabwe, under the protection and trustworthy word of the very “civil” Robert Mugabe is about as crazy a decision of the ACB and the English Cricket Associations to still send their players to this hostile part of the world. The Western society in Zimbabwe is not exactly treated with the most hospitality possible as has been seen over the years under the Robert Mugabe regime. These people are known to torture, kill and destroy anything that opposes their ways. This is the same country that only last year had Mugabe bully his way back into power by killing any known supporters of the opposition party the Movement for Democratic Change, the MDC.
Any known or even suspected supported had to flee to remote country areas or be killed and if they were not discovered as MDC they had to pretend to be Mugabe supporters until there election day and now that he is back in power, they must keep living in fear… pretending. If he has done these things to his own people then how can the players be kept safe if the people that are supposed to be protecting them are the same criminal leaders of Mugabe’s Zimbabwe? It is not the public that the players have to fear; it’s the government and authorities themselves. The ICC and Zimbabwean cricket associations argument is that the money that would be raised from these World Cup matches is essential for the survival of Zimbabwean cricket and that a boycott would cripple it. If this cash crisis is as serious as they say it is then we should just compensate Zimbabwean cricket and have the game moved to South Africa. It is a small price to pay for player safety.

Even with this, how can we be sure that the money they raise or are given won’t be just put straight into the Mugabe regime? Can we really trust a dictator? The Australian cricket team has become a national icon and has made many Australians proud and sending them to these games really is an unnecessary risk that we cannot possibly take.
