With nearly 1 billion citizens, India is the second most populated nation in the world. There are twenty-four languages that are spoken by a million people or more, and countless other dialects. India has seven major religions and many minor ones, six main ethnic groups, and countless holidays. India is located in South Asia and it is a country named officially the Republic of India. It borders the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the west, and the Bay of Bengal on the east. It is the seventh-largest country by area and the second-most populous country.
Mainland India is bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the west, and the Bay of Bengal on the east; and it is bordered by Pakistan to the west.

If you look at India’s history, you will find that India is full of so many interesting facts. Indians have always been intelligent and creative. It is one of the oldest countries in the world. It is a land where all the people from different cultures and religious background live together as a nation. Indian people are very friendly and caring. They like spending time with their families. There are so many different languages spoken in India but still you can communicate with people through the national language of Hindi.
India is also known for their beautiful buildings and statues, known as the Taj Mahal, one of the eight wonders of the world. Emperor named Sahah Jahan, for his wife Mumtaz Mahal Shah Jahan met Mumtaz Mahal and fell in love. He married her after five years and they were leading a very happy life. While giving birth to their last child, Mumtaz Mahal died due to some complications. A few years later Shah Jahan built the world’s most beautiful monument “Taj Mahal” in the memory of his wife.

Food and characteristic flavors of the country:
India is known for the type of food, spices, and cuisine, there are many types of food eaten in all over India. Possibly the most famous Punjabi contribution to Indian food is the tandoori style of cooking. This method uses large earthen ovens that are heated to high temperatures using coal fires. Once hot, many types of meat, breads, or vegetable dishes may be cooked inside. This method gives food a distinctive flavor and seals in the aroma of the item.
India is a diverse country with many regional cultures; each region has its own food specialties, primarily at regional level, but also at provincial level. The differences can come from a local culture and geographical location whether a region is close to the sea, desert or the mountains, and economics. Indian cuisine is also seasonal with priority placed on the use of fresh produce.
Many people in Punjab eat some meat. Thus, the state has developed many chicken and lamb dishes that are coated in spicy onion and mustard or sweet cream sauces. Milk products such as yoghurt lassis and fresh cheeses are also an important part of the Punjabi diet, as are pulses and wheat.
Food from North India is characterized by its thick, tasty gravies. North Indians love chilies, saffron, milk, yoghurt, cottage cheese, ghee (clarified butter) and nuts. Their meals are hearty and often include several dishes. Sweets are a huge favourite too.
Meal patterns:
India is a country lucky enough to experience nearly all seasons and climates; be it summer, winter, monsoons, coastal; India experiences them all. As a result of this seasonal diversity, a variety of crops, vegetables, and spices are easily available;
Traditionally, food was served in metallic plates (Bronze) in north India and on banana leaves as one moved south. Food was generally served in the kitchen area itself or near the area adjoining the kitchen. Families sat on the floor, or on small raised platforms to have food. Today, dining tables, cutlery, and dinner plates have a place in every household. The styles of eating and mannerisms have experienced a change over a period of time. But even today, the main dish is relished along with a number of condiments like chutneys, pickles and the food is generally spicy.

Indian food is served on a rug on the floor and people are supposed to sit in a circle. In case you are using a table, let the eldest person sit first. The host is supposed to sit in a direction from where he can see everyone around him. When everyone is seated, wait for the food to be served. You should not chatter unnecessarily with the people around you. Indian tradition does not emphasize on the use of cutlery which are considered to be a part of western culture, such as fork and knife. Indian food such as curries and gravy, Indians tend to use their hands to eat. India is known for its superstations and beliefs, some beliefs about food in India are; Eating and tasting all the dishes is not necessary. Take only those dishes which you feel like eating and tasting; leftovers in a plate are not liked, take only as much food as can be finished. Food is respected in India in ever country, in every corner. Once you have finished your food, don’t leave the table until the host asks you to. If you have to leave the table, ask for the permission from the people before leaving. It may sound as if all these rules are hard to follow, but an Indian dinner together is one of a kind, it’s your family and you.
North India it is not acceptable to stain your hands with gravies or curries, only fingertips it used to pick and gather food. However, in south India, you can take liberty to dip your hand up to your palms. Don’t flood your plate with food. You don’t have to taste each and every dish served. Finish your whole food before asking for more. Wasting food is considered disrespect to the host and the food.
Use of food in celebrations or religious practices:
Being a highly spiritual country, festivals are at the heart of people’s lives in India. The numerous and varied festivals that are held throughout the year offer a unique way of seeing Indian culture at its best. There are many holidays and festivals celebrated in India, it would take days to talk about all of them, but the top 3 that are the most important, and also the ones that stand out to me are diwail, holi, and Navaratri (Dussehra, and Durga Puja).

The first one that stands out the most in Indian culture would be diwail; Diwail is a five day festival that represents the start of the Hindu New Year. Each day of the festival has a different meaning. The main festivities take place on the third day (this year, on November 5), while the fourth day is celebrated as New Year’s Day. On the third day, lots of small clay lamps (called diyas) and candles are lit and placed in houses, and fireworks are let off everywhere, giving Diwali its name of “Festival of Lights”. However, special blessings are given to Laxshmi, the Goddess of wealth and prosperity, and Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. The candlelight makes Diwali a very warm and atmospheric festival, and it’s observed with much joy and happiness. However, be prepared for lots of loud noise from the fireworks and firecrackers going off. Apart from sweet dishes, there are several other delicacies that are made on the occasion of Diwali, Dahi-bhalle and Ghathiya are the two most popular of them. The Diwali cuisines also depend upon the culture and family traditions. From north to south and east to west. On Diwali, there is a custom to exchange sweets to the friends and neighbors that is why Diwali can’t even be imagined without sweets and savories that are specially made at home. The list of Diwali special sweets is exhaustive. Gulab Jamun, Gajar Ka Halwa, Besan Ke Ladoo, Karanji and Jalebis are the most commonly made sweets on this occasion.
The second celebration that a lot of people know of is called holi; Holi got its name as the “Festival of Colors” from Lord Krishna, a re-incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who liked to play pranks on the village girls by drenching them in water and colors. The festival marks the end of winter and the abundance of the upcoming spring harvest season. The day after the full moon in March each year. In 2011, Holi will be celebrated on Sunday, March 20. One of the best and most exuberant places to celebrate Holi is in Delhi — or head to the temple town of Vrindavan, four hours from Delhi. People spend the day smearing colored powder all over each other’s faces, throwing colored water at each other, having parties, and dancing under water sprinklers. The emphasis of Holi rituals is on the burning of the demoness Holika. On the eve of Holi, large bonfires are lit to mark occasion and to burn evil spirits. Different communities in India celebrate Holi by preparing special food. Here we present few holi special dishes eaten on this special day, the most popular and common of which is Thandai with the addition of Bhaang. Maharashtrains prefer Puran Poli. North Indians prepare Shakarpara and gujjias – a sweet samosa filled with mava, coconut, dry fruits which is fried and dipped in a sugar syrup. Gujaratis make sweet khichidi and sweets like kheer, basundi and halva.

Impact on Canadian culture:
In my own opinion, India has impacted Canada in a lot of ways; some of the main ways is food products. Most Canadians know Indians for their spices (mostly curry, Indian people are known as curry eaters, as a side reference) most Canadians know about the food that Indians eat, our food is delicious, may be really spices, but overall amazing food. India has also impacted Canada in clothing, Indian clothes are really fancy, and most Canadians love our clothing. When it came’s to weddings Canadians only wear a white dress, but on the other hand, Indian weddings are done with colour, a lot of colour, red, gold, yellow, we show our love through colors. India has also impacted Canada in restaurants; there are many of Indian restaurants all over Canada. Therefore in my opinion India has impacted Canada a lot.
