Go deep, work hard and always be open to learning.’ David Rockefeller Jnr
There is no pill for success. There is no shortcut. There is no fast track – well not for a lasting success. We have all seen cases where fast success has in a few years been derailed. What we want to experience is a success that lasts a lifetime, and that is passed on to the next generation.
And that is why Rockefeller’s statement is so powerful.
So let’s take a closer look at what it will take to lead a successful life.
1. Go Deep
Someone once told me that if you ever want to become passionate about any particular subject then you need to dig deeper. I have personally found that the deeper I dig the more knowledgeable and excited I become. True lasting success is not built upon that which has been slapped together on top of a shallow foundation constructed on a sandy surface. True success, that builds and grows, is built upon foundations dug out of the rock, and that is accompanied by deep investigative and consistent study. I am reminded of the depth of foundations required for skyscrapers. The higher you want to go, the deeper you must go.
2. Work Hard
I know that we have been presented with the proposal such as the 4 hour week and the cliche to work smart. But at the end of the day, if you love what you do, you will work harder than the hardest. It is actually not work at all. It is a place whereby you can develop character, skills, relationships, as well as a future for both your life and for those whom you love. Of course, in the midst of this it is important to learn how to work smarter. Learn to delegate. Learn to use technology’s gifts to your advantage. But at the same time work hard at what you do with a spirit of excellence.
The Homework on A Students Responsibility Work Hard Learn
Most people think that work starts when you either turn sixteen and can work in the local grocery market, or when you turn thirty and finally land yourself a career such as a teacher, secretary, lawyer, doctor, etc. However this is very untrue. Work starts at about the age of five. As soon as a young child steps their foot into preschool, nursery school, or kindergarten, they start their first of ...
3. Always Be Open To Learning
Since I left school I have learnt so much more than I ever learnt within any educational institution. That is why I continue to read, to listen and to attend seminars that expand my brain. The more I learn the more I realize that I don’t know. You and I will never graduate from the school of learning – and with a world that continues to change at the speed of thought, we must always keep an open mind so that we can analyze all that we see, touch or hear. Even when I hear things that I don’t understand, or even disagree with, I seek to learn. And one of my greatest teachers appears whenever I make a mistake. Rather than burying myself in sorrow or regret I ask the question, ‘What is the lesson that I can learn from this?’
So go deep, work hard, and for all your days upon planet earth, always be open to learning. These are your three keys to a successful life.
Children do not have the ability to steer their own lives. For many children, mom and/or dad are on top of things, concentrating on the kids’ needs, allowing the kids to concentrate on just being kids. But this is not the case for some. There are children burdened with very adult concerns of survival. Their lives are not just about homework and after school sports, but include real questions of well-being like where they will live and how their food, clothing and other basic necessities will be supplied. So the question of caring and concerned adults becomes: How can we enable these kids to let go of the greater questions of survival and focus on childhood responsibilities like school work? The answer is not simple, but can be simply put: we help their guardians.
The nationwide DLA Piper signature project, “Advancing Education’s Promise”, is dedicated to improving the quality of education for children in the many communities the firm serves. The pro bono work of the firm’s Baltimore office is a thriving component of this national effort and focuses on helping children do well in school by helping their parents and guardians stabilize home life. The premise behind the project is that by improving a student’s quality of life through legal services, that student will have a better chance of simply being able to attend school and learn at his or her full potential. The Baltimore arm of this project aims to provide parents and guardians access to top notch pro bono legal services in the hopes that those services will allow children to take full advantage of their educations.

James Mathias and Ray Earnest, attorneys in DLA Piper’s Baltimore office, lead the local arm of this worthy firm wide project. Mathias is a graduate of Georgetown Law and has been with the firm since he started working in private practice in the late 1980s. His first pro bono experience was in law school where he served as a public defender. Earnest is a graduate of Baltimore’s University of Maryland School of Law and got her first taste of pro bono work in that school’s Special Education Clinic. Their first experiences in pro bono work introduced them to the type of communities now served by the Advancing Education’s Promise project – communities where instability is the norm and the basic needs of children are often unmet. The continued commitment of these attorneys to serve such communities makes the legal profession a proud one.
Through a partnership with four of the city’s public charter schools, over 150 DLA attorneys have provided clinic style legal assistance and direct services to nearly 300 families in a range of areas including housing, public benefits, estate, and family law. DLA Piper refers many more families to appropriate legal services providers and assists them in applying for services. Now in its fourth year, the project will continue to bring these valuable pro bono services to more families, and more children will succeed in school and beyond as a result.
How does one define success in a project like “Advancing Education’s Promise”? It isn’t as straightforward as winning or losing in court. Rather, winning in this project is knowing that mere access to basic legal services leads to a quality of life that gives our children an opportunity to achieve education’s promise.
The Essay on A Day In The Life Of A School Bag
It was a typical (ordinary) school day and I was being packed with my heavy load. I had different compartments. Inside in you could find books, pencils, erasers, rulers, dictionary, Atlas of Belize, some coins and other stuff (things). My zips were closed and I was lifted off the ground. It was time to go to school. I was being tossed (flipped, swung) around. I kept bumping into something hard. ...
Be Proactive
Viktor Frankl said that between stimulus and response there is a gap, and within this gap lies all our freedom. Even as he was suffering immense privations in a Nazi concentration camp, he realized that he was responsible for his thoughts and actions and was not simply a bundle of conditioned responses.
Like Frankl, we should strive to be the creators of our own destiny, orchestrating our experience of life. Everything starts in the mind and ripples out, so what happens around us is a reflection of our own inner world. Whether we allow our inner world to grow wild, whether we let weeds spring up and take hold or whether we cultivate a green and pleasant garden – it is all our choice: this is what it means to be proactive.
Take Responsibility
Since we have the power to choose our experience, we also need to accept responsibility for this. Perhaps not that everything that comes our way is a direct result of our own thinking (though some might say it is) but what we attract into our life is, largely, a reflection of our thinking. Much of this occurs on a subconscious level, but the subconscious takes its lead from the thinking mind, so changing our thoughts will change our world, and we are responsible for this.
Our behavior is a natural outcome of our mental images, and so we are responsible for our behavior too, and also for the behavior we tolerate in others. If we allow others to ride roughshod over us, then we have ourselves to blame.
Be a Good Leader
We cannot be effective in any area of life unless we have good leadership skills. Leadership is an art and each of us needs to find our own approach to it. Primarily, we need to understand how to lead ourselves, and this means having a compass, a direction which guides all our actions. This compass often takes the form of a personal mission statement, a document spelling out the values we live by.
As we lead others, whether as parents, bosses, in families or organizations of which we are a part, we need first and foremost to lead by example, making it clear what our values are and that we live by them. Any inconsistency in our professed values and our behavior will be spotted, seen through and will ruin our effectiveness. Personal complicity and double standards are the nails in the coffin of our ability to lead.
The Essay on What did it mean for a man in Ancient Greece to lead a good life
In Ancient Greece, leading a good life is rather more complex than it is in today’s society. It is evidenced in Plato’s four dialogs in The Trial and Death of Socrates. Through the dialogues of Socrates we can learn that in Ancient Greece education, religion, society in general, law and values played a major role on a person’s way of living a good life. In the dialogues of The Trial and Death of ...
A good leader will lead quietly and subtly, from the rear, without fuss, without fanfare. In the words of the Tao Te Ching,
‘A good soldier does not inspire fear;
A good fighter does not display aggression;
A good conqueror does not engage in battle;
A good leader does not exercise authority.
This is the value of unimportance;
This is how to win the cooperation of others;
This to how to build the same harmony that is in nature.’
Don’t Let Fear Stop You
I love the movies of M Night Shyamalan. My favorite is The Village. The film is about facing the fears that haunt us and realizing that, when we do so, they disappear – nothing is as it seems. I heard once (though I can’t remember where) that the most commonly given command in the Bible is ‘do not be afraid.’
Whenever we grow, there is fear. Whenever we do something new, there is fear. Whenever we push ourselves to new heights or expand our comfort zone, there is fear. This is the nature of life. Life is always moving – either we are moving forward, growing, or we are moving back, dying. We have a choice – we can either grow or we can die. Growth and fear go hand in hand. It’s part of a package, and if we fail to embrace the whole package, we will die.
Don’t fear failure – failure is inevitable and necessary. Look at the life of any successful person and you will see a litany of failure. This failure is the foundation of success, so long as we learn from it.
Don’t fear other people. They are as vulnerable and as beautiful as you are – only sometimes they lash out in various ways to protect themselves. Everyone is doing their best, so be gentle on other people and don’t be scared of them.
When you face your fears, they will vanish like smoke.
Never Stop Learning
I have come to the conclusion that learning is the fundamental activity in a successful and purposeful life. If we fail to learn, we fail to grow, and this means that we die. Life gives us endless opportunities to learn, and the more difficult the situation, the more we are likely to learn.
We can learn from other people, especially difficult ones – they are like angels sent from heaven to teach us about ourselves. We can learn from the things happening around us. And most of all, we can learn by watching ourselves, seeing how we react and reflecting deeply on what moves us.
The Essay on Why Do Bad Things Happer To Good People
Why do bad things happen to good people? Why do good things happen to bad people? These two questions have bewildered mankind throughout the centuries. Even the greatest philosophers and theologians have yet to develop a concrete answer. Philosophers, theologians, and even religious leaders have developed many hypotheses. Some of these hypotheses support each other while others conflict. It is for ...
These five activities, if they can become habits, will lead to success in all areas of life. They are not a quick fix, but are the foundation of a life lived well.
AS their child grows up and moves through the school, parents’ concerns begin to focus on how they will cope in the “big, wide world.”
Bartley Green School helps with this too – it isn’t just about exam results, it is about equipping young people with the leadership, communication, social and organisational skills they need in the workplace.
These skills are developed, not just through work in the classroom, but through the huge range of opportunities to be involved in school life. For example:
Trips to Wales, the Lake District, France and Ireland.
Sports for all. Football, netball, rugby, tennis, table tennis, orienteering – and new for 2008 are golf and climbing. Also, some of the school’s pupils have been to South Africa developing sporting links with children from a township.
Music, drama and art feature largely in school life, with school productions including performances at the ICC, professional theatres and local primary schools.
New for 2008 – GCSE Dance and pupils will be designing a sculpture for the grounds to celebrate it’s new Foundation Status, granted in February, 2008.
It brings three big advantages:
The governing body now employs the school staff and can keep up the quality of the skilled teams working in all areas.
The governors are responsible for the building and grounds and can develop them to fit its vision of quality schooling and curriculum needs.
The governors control admissions.
This allows the school to secure its future as a local school for the Bartley Green community.
Bartley Green is an outstanding school. It is second best in the country in terms of the “value-added” for pupils.
It will go on developing.
The school has to be the best it can be for the Bartley Green community.
