Mid-term Essay
“Teenagers are given too much freedom in today’s society. You may support or oppose this topic.”
Teenagers, are they too free? Some may reason that they don’t have enough freedom while others feel that they have too much freedom. Before we get in to reasoning let us first define what is a teenager? The Webster Dictionary defines a teenager as being or like people in their teens. In my opinion a teenager is one who has reached teen years; 13-19. Now that we have an idea of what s teenager is, let us now discuss why individuals feel that teenagers’ freedom must be limited and extended.
Nowadays, many teenagers are spoilt; they are doing things that are unsuitable for their age. You may ask, why? I am sorry to say but, kids have too much freedom. Which they take for granted and don’t know how to control themselves. It’s a shame to see teenagers at midnight wandering the streets smoking, when they are supposed to be sleeping at home. It is also sad to see teenagers taking drugs, when they could or are supposed to be studying. These incidents happen in our daily lives and teenagers make uses of their so-called freedom to do whatever they want irrepressibly. The teenagers’ parents are responsible for their offspring’s rampant acts. They are giving their child too much freedom and money, yet they don’t provide them with any guidance.
As a result, the young people who are lacking discipline will misunderstand how to use freedom properly which leads to cases of them smoking, taking drugs, committing crime, suicide and even promiscuity. All these will have a negative effect on the society, which results in immorality. Sometimes, you can see students on the street associating with a gang of youths wasting their precious time, smoking and using foul languages; you may even see teenagers in discos dancing, taking drugs and having alcohol. The worst is to read news of promiscuity about female and male teenagers having sex for gratification and stimulation. These are all results of exploiting and misusing freedom. In addition, parental guidance and care are neglected.
The Term Paper on Teenagers And Smoking Smoke School Adolescents
HOW SMOKING AFFECTS TEENAGERS Assessment smoking among teenagers is on the rise. Statistics have shown that smoking trends were decreasing between 1976 and 1985 by approximately 10%, but have started to climb since the early 1990's (Lawrence 1999). Over the last decade, there has been more than a seventy- percent increase in youth smoking. The average age of onset of smoking is fourteen years old. ...
I strongly agree that young people nowadays have too much freedom. Due to the lack of parental guidance and care, those undisciplined teenagers will exploit freedom. I admit that freedom must be given to a teenage child, but too much freedom will cause chaos in society, especially to those teenagers who can’t control themselves.
On the other hand, there is a percentage of persons that disagree with this statement. Why? Well an individual may reason that freedom is good because teenagers have a lot to deal with and have a lot of responsibilities. They have jobs while going through puberty and on top of that, they are trying to prove themselves responsible and grown up to their parents. A lot more teenagers are moving out at a very young age these days and if parents would understand them a bit more then it wouldn’t be so stressful for teenagers.
Secondly, school takes away a lot of their time. Freedom of time, originality, choices, freedom of speech and even freedom they have after school. “School and homework take up all the time I have in that one day. Between homework, school and sleeping I don’t have any time to do the things that excites me. Not even on the holidays and brakes”; said my younger cousin Alicia, a student a of S.C. McPherson Junior High School. This is important to know because most teenagers are struggling with this “freedom.” This usually leads to poor examination results, too much pressure and teenagers dropping out of school and society. Parents hold back a lot of their children’s freedom. They like to make sure their children do not make the mistakes they made when they were younger, failing to realize that they are holding their children back from experience. Also parents have a lot of expectations for their children such as; to go to school, getting good grades, not talking back and doing what they are told when they are told, so where is the freedom in that? Parents are too afraid to let their children into the world fearing that they will lose touch with them

Although freedom is used recklessly, there still is a need for parents to give their teenager some freedom. Whether it’s just a few hours with friend or a suitable outing. Yes, freedom can be a good thing if used correctly. Just remember, “Too much of a good thing is not so good!”
