Anything Is Possible
In this world if you are born rich people think you will stay rich and if you are born poor you will be poor forever. This book The Glass Castle proves us wrong. Jeannette Walls, to be exact is the woman who made some of us think differently. Some people cry over loosing their favorite thing, but if we compare our life to Jeannette Walls life we are seriously living in luxury. Her story is inspirational. She goes through poverty, rape, bullying, self reliance, but most of all she goes through child neglect. She overcomes all of these horrible things and becomes successful.
Jeannette is the second child of four siblings. At the age of three she started her adulthood. Her mom is a selfish but artistic woman and her dad is loving and intelligent but has an alcohol problem. They move from time to time never really establishing a home. Eventually they settle somewhere they can call a home, which is in West Virginia. In that place the kids live in cardboard boxes and in the winter they almost freeze because of how cold it is. Her dad never has a stable job ,he finds random ones and does not last so long in them. He spends most of his money on alcohol leaving his family without food. Jeannette would get the food out of the trashcan at school because she would go days without eating. The siblings learn how to take care of themselves at an early age. As soon as they can afford a trip they left to New York and their parents followed still choosing to be homeless as their children became successful.
The Term Paper on Child Prostitution And Pornography In Southeast Asia
Child pornography and prostitution are two of the most disturbing issues in the world today. Millions of children, in virtually every country in the world, become victims of sexual exploitation. Access to child pornography and prostitution in Southeast Asia has increased during the 1990s due to the lack of government legislation and enforcement protecting children. Japan is the worlds global ...
The Walls Family loves each other in an odd way. The parents always tend to show their love in a peculiar way. Rex and Mary did not raise their children like parents normally do. They want their children to go through tough things then to learn from them. For example, when Rex is trying to show Jeannette how to swim. He just throws her in the water instead of holding her and showing her how to do it. The unique way of thinking and raising became into child neglect. child neglect is a parental failure in providing supervision, food, education, good role model, safe housing ,health care.(etc)
Rex and Mary would both leave their children by themselves when they were still really young. Jeannette said, ”That left me at thirteen ,the head of the household”. One summer Lori, which is Jeannette’s older sister left to a summer camp all season. Rex had not came home for a couple of days and Mary had to leave for eight weeks to renew her teaching certificate. At the age of thirteen they gave her the responsibility to pay bills, buy food, and take care of her younger siblings. Mary gave her some money to take care of that but Rex came asking Jeannette for money. Not only did he have the courage to ask his daughter for money he also told her it was for alcohol. Jeannette gave him some money and she had to make that money up herself. While Rex knowing that sometimes his kids would go days without eating he still would waist money on alcohol and ciggarettes.
“We kids usually kept our hunger to ourselves, but we were always thinking about food and how to get our hands on it.” , said Jeannette. At this time Rex had just purposely gotten fired from being an electrician. His excuse was that he wanted to look for gold. When Rex lost his job the refrigerator would go empty right away. Jeannette and Brian were always trying to get food on their own. During recess time, Jeannette would go through lunch boxes and get little thing like crackers or apples. She would also ask to go into her friends restroom and if there was nobody in the kitchen she would take something from the refrigerator and eat it in the restroom. Brian was once caught steeling pickles from a neighbors house. The neighbors caught him and punished him by making him eat the whole jar of pickles. Rex was so selfish by intentionally getting fired. His kids suffered a lot looking for food.
The Essay on Unwanted Child By Mary Blew
The Unwanted Child, by Mary Clear man Blew, is a look into the life of this author when she was 18-year-old and facing several unexpected, important decisions. Rex and Mary were actually not that bad in one thing. That was in giving their children education. Jeannette ,Brian, Lori, and Maureen were not always enrolled in school but they were very bright children. The reason why is because Rex taught them a lot of things like math and history. Also when Mary was hired at the school as a teacher the children would help her proofread the homework, that helped them a lot for their future. Rex would only do this while sober because when drinking he was a whole different person.
When it came to Rex getting drunk he was so violent and aggressive specially with his wife. He did not think about his children hearing everything he would tell her. “You crazy bitch!” He yelled at her one day. He was trying to run her over to get her trapped and put her back on the car. They were arguing about how many months pregnant Mary was. He started screaming at her so she decided to run out of the car. The children were telling Rex to stop but all he did was ignore them. Jeannette was more worried about the baby inside her mom than she was about Mary. How can parents do this in front of their kids, specially for the dumbest reasons. All of this happened and the next day they were as if nothing had happened. This is one of the many not role model things Mary and Rex showed their children.
The Walls family was used to not living in very comfortable places all the time. They went through a lot in the last house they lived in before moving to New York. That house was in Welch, in Little Hobart Street. Rex built a set of bunk beds for the kids, he used cardboard boxes instead of mattresses. Jeanette said, ”We called the kitchen the loose-juice room.” Why? Because every time they touched any damp or metallic surface they got an electric shock. They all went through it at least once. That was not the only defect of the kitchen it would also leak when it rained. The kids tried to patch it but they eventually gave up so if it rained outside it rained inside too. They dug a hole outside for their garbage .That was nothing compared to the winter time. It was very cold in Welch during that time. Brian and Jeannette would pick up pieces of coal that would fall off of trucks . They had to find ways to stay warm. It was so cold in their house that icicles hung from the kitchen. The children would also fight about who got to sleep with the dogs because they kept them a little warmer. One time Brian’s iguana froze to death because of how cold it was. Jeannette would love school because of her warm classrooms. It is hard to believe that while Rex knowing his kids were living like this he still decided to waste money on alcohol instead of fixing the house.
The Essay on Child Kids Wrong Smack
It's apparent in this day and age that we have a problem with teenagers and children acting up against their parents. We have kids vandalizing houses, stealing cars, getting pregnant, drinking, and doing drugs. This kind of behavior is unacceptable. We shouldn't allow our children to walk all over us and do what they want. Time outs are ridiculous. Think of all the valuable time wasted when those ...
Rex never liked the doctor. If the kids ever had to go to the doctor he would check them out the Rex Walls-style. When Jeannette got burned at the age of three ,she was not yet ready to be out ,but Rex still decided to take her out. The same thing happened when Mary had Maureen. We never knew why. We inferred it was because of the money, but he still should not be doing such a dangerous thing.
The Walls family was an odd but special family. These kids went through a lot and did not give up until they were satisfied with their lives. Jeannette went through all this child neglect ,but this did not stop her. She is now a regular contributor to MSNBC. It really is an inspirational story ,it shows us that no matter where we come from we can always achieve everything we set our minds to.
