Essay # 1
Its Better to Give than Receive
Attractive, smart, athletic and down to earth are some of the traits that help describe my best friend Guadalupe. Her sense of humor and humble personality make her a person I cherish greatly. Lupita’s importance to me in my life is by far the most influential and positive I have ever had.
As days before summer vacation awaited the excitement from most of my classmates didn’t wait to expose. From a wooden desk in the back of the lonely classroom, with a chair transmitting a cold sensation , like snow rolling down my spine, with graffiti all over the desk almost spelling out the words, “High School Dropout ,” I watched my classmates laugh, cry and even dance of happiness of the completion of a new year. Then, like in most of my classes Lupita sat next to me “Holding my back,” kind of like a flower depends on sunlight to bloom or how a car needs gasoline to run. In contrast to Guadalupe’s seat her’s seemed kind of hot compared to mine she would lean back and the seat wouldn’t even make a sound, she had all the resources she needed to succeed at a simple reach. The stapler , the sharpener and even the teacher, not to mention she had a perfect view of her name “Guadalupe Garcia” up on the wall as one of the top students of the class. The desktop instead of laughing like it did with me, it reflected lupita’s beautiful image, her bright smile and her precious caramel eyes that emphasize her long dark beautiful hair.

Later in the class maybe a quarter before the bell rang everyone in class received there final grade. I knew I didn’t do very good on my test a few days before but I couldn’t let my best friend know. I wanted to impress her after being by her side through awards like the MVP of the volleyball team, top ten student of the whole Junior class and best attendance. So as soon as my teacher gave me the results I took a glance at it and tried to avoid any conversation about my grade with my best friend. I started yapping about the soccer game I didn’t get to watch that weekend. However, she perfectly knew my intentions and as real as she is lupita told me “Why are you hiding your grade?” I stuttered for a second or two or three. She couldn’t believe I was hiding my grade away from her. She gave me a chance to explain myself with her gorgeous eyes illuminating almost making me forget the poor academic performance I made that year. It felt for a minute, like I planned for this to happen on purpose so she could stare at me and I could get lost in her eyes. But it was nothing like that and I certainly didn’t plan to have such low grades that year. She had that serious look in her face, after she glanced at my grade she had something to say and so did I. She began by saying “Are you ashamed of your grade?” and needless to say I was and I admitted it. But I also admitted something else, just like I’ve tried to hide my grade for that math class I did the same thing with the rest of my other grades. All in an effort to get her to like me but in an instant it was clear to me. Previous years, from the day I met such a fabulous girl like Guadalupe I had a crush on her. I was the first to introduce her around the school campus, and one of the first people she met. From their on we would hang out to the point were she helped me with my homework any time we had the chance.
Until that moment I had built a special feeling. I was aware that trough her help I had achieve great things. But that year, my junior year she didn’t have the time like before to help me as much with my assignments. I depended on her to succeed and that was something bad. Then I told her I had no possibility of graduating for the main reason that I don’t like studying. “ I wont succeed I told her.” She tied her hair in a knot for some reasons I don’t really know why but It looked like she was preparing to Knock me out with that knot she had in her hair. She began talking about how I should value education. I just seen those big lips open several times every second. She inspired me keep going forward through naming the struggles shes been through. Lupita talked was talking like a teacher on steroids, highly educated. “ The opportunity of becoming whatever you want is open and if you want to take it go ahead.” “But if you don’t just remember the consequences that come along.” Her long brown skinned arms moved from side to side like a mime trying to escape a tiny box. I didn’t really like school like she did , she had so much hunger for education it was amazing. She then in her words described why she’s into learning and she explained that she just wants to demonstrate to her family shes worthy of something.

Guadalupe told me the techniques and strategies she uses to study and take notes in class. She said “ Before I had the same mentality as you, that school is nothing worth the effort, but then I learned that education can open so many doors for you if you really set your mind into it. Watch less TV , set up a schedule and take notes of the key points during lectures and then the next day ask any questions you may have.” Then as she was about to say another line a couple of my classmates came up to her and congratulated her for so many accomplishments. It was amazing how they approach her like she was the movie star and everyone else the fan’s trying to get an autograph. From that moment I understood that I wanted to be just as successful as her or maybe I just want to impress her!
