I remember the days when you wanted to impress that special someone, so you got a new haircut. You wanted to make a new friend so you approached them and started a pleasant conversation? Nowadays, you write something funny on twitter or update your profile picture on Facebook to really seal the deal. Even in our professional life, cyber socializing has evolved to such an extent that posting special pictures online can get you in trouble with your boss. Now businesses even take advantage of social media by tweeting about products and events. Who can draw the line between your professional and social life anymore? Society has grown dependent on reciprocal communication not only for social interaction but defining one’s social identity.
We have reality and the cyber world consisting of social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr. There are obvious reasons why we get a social network account such as it is much easier to keep in contact with family members, reconnect with old friends or to promote businesses. They can also simply be good fun! Spying on your crush, stalking your favorite celebrities on Twitter so you feel like you’re part of their world or even checking up on an enemy to make sure her life is just as pathetic as yours. When one world disappoints us, we tend to shift to the other. I know people that are the most quiet, shy and uninteresting person in real life but place them in front of a computer and they are hilariously witty which gives introverted individuals a chance to express themselves. Gaining a new follower, friend request, comment or even your pictures being reblogged really does boost your confidence and can make you feel wanted thus curing forms of loneliness. However these websites can also have the complete opposite effect.

I was watching, “Glee” this week and it was about a homosexual teenager who was being bullied. The show highlighted the fact that bullying nowadays can be done easier, more forcefully and spread to a wider community through a number of technological devices. Society, especially teenagers, can be destructively malicious regarding other human beings and through these sites this can be done with ease. Social networks are the perfect place to set up their camp, target their victims and make them feel like they’re nothing in public. Pressure to protect ones reputation is so much worse than before social networks reached its influential summit.
Then again, sites such as Facebook and Twitter can make it especially difficult to fight the urge to annoy or be more honest than you normally appear to be. I mean who cares if Robert, “just had a coke zero, went for a walk and then took a nap.” Yippdididoda, you took a nap today and yesterday and the week before that! But people have better things to do than study your sleeping habits. An even better example is that half naked girl who is always there, who post personal information about intimate issues or stories about people that have absolutely no place on social network sites. I mean, who can resist the urge to tell her to go get a blog so people interested can read her constant complaining about her being fat.
I’ll admit to have become a slave to social networks and as a matter of fact, the internet in general. The moment I realized that I’ve become completely and utterly submissive to these dictators, is when I calculated that I’ve spent more time talking to my friends online than in person over this past school break. I mean who needs to hang out in person when you can listen to music, catch up on your chores or homework while socializing or pretend like you care about your girlfriend’s pointless dramas without her being able to see you rolling your eyes every 10 seconds. I used to be absolutely against these so called “pointless sites” as many parents call them because they are the most popular source of procrastination, they contribute a great deal to bullying, it’s the reason why less and less teenagers are looking each other in the eye and they are horribly addictive. However, nowadays I’m constantly being dragged into the evil and I’m loving every little bit of it.
