The Stone Angel is Hagar’s mother’s tombstone and it is in the cemetery of the town. Her father imported the statue made of marble from Italy for a hefty price. The tombstone says, “Rest in peace. From toil, surcease. Regina We ese.
1886.” She died while giving birth to Hagar. Hagar stays home and remembers her past. She has a son by the name of Marvin and he doesn’t like her smoking. Hagar does not like her daughter-in-law Doris. Hagar’s father was satisfied with the way Hagar did in school, if she gets a star for her work; her dad would give her candies from the store. Hagar and her two brothers would do at least an hour of homework everyday, when they finish their homework early her father would make the do extra sums as practice.
The Wachakwa River’s ice was solid as marble and was perfect for skating. Mr. Doherty makes his sons cut out blocks of ice because he owned the Mana waka Icehouse. One day when Hagar’s brother Dan was showing off to the girls, he fell into one of those ice holes. Matt pulled Dan out of the river and walked Dan to their house.
Dan caught pneumonia the next day, and passed away the night after. On his deathbed, Dan wanted his mother and Matt tried to comfort him with her scarf. Hagar trips over her bedroom rug in present day. She was on her way downstairs for a cup of tea and Marvin and his wife make a big deal out of the fact that she fell. Marvin and Doris bring up that they want to sell the house and the idea doesn’t sit well with Hagar because it is her house. After a great hassle caused by the idea of selling the house, they drop it.
