Procrastination is generally defined as the act of replacing high priority actions with those that have less priority. In psychology, procrastination is the temporal gap between intended behavior and enacted behavior. (Mind tools) This psychological behaviour is widely associated with adolescents, especially those in college where homework and projects are prominent parts of life. It is also estimated that up to 95% of college students have the constant urge to procrastinate.
Ever since I have started my pre-IB course, I have noticed numerous times when the subconscious idea of procrastination have overwhelmed my limited self-control, hence causing me to only start on homework and projects on the night before it is due. As the year progressed, I have noticed a significantly worsening problem of procrastination; the urge to procrastinate constantly overwhelmed my duty of homework.
The most significant event that displayed my terrible habit of procrastination is my failure to hand in my Economics homework on time. I only had 2 hours before the deadline at that time, but I thought that I could have finished it on time so I decided to play a few minutes of Tetris. Those few precious minutes spent on playing Tetris caused my failure to hand in the assignment on time as I was only late for less than a minute. In light of that event, I have realized that procrastination is a dominant and destructive force in me, that it can possibly destroy my academic life.
Area of Knowledge:
My knowledge and new-found urge of anti-procrastination belongs in the “ethics” category of Theory of Knowledge. The significance of anti-procrastination to the world is that without it, the world in general would be a much more productive place where things would get done a lot quicker. It is estimated that up to 20% of the whole world are severe procrastinators, and if the problem of procrastination is completely removed from the world, then there would be 20% more effective forces of labour, thus creating a better world of creativity and productivity. (EurakAlert!) This significant part of the values of ethics is interlinked with all other areas of knowledge, because if one cannot get past procrastination, he will not gain any knowledge for he is not accomplishing anything.

Impact on me:
After my abrupt realization that procrastination can possibly bring a nasty side-effect to my studies, I started to cut off on video games, along with social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. However, for one to completely quit procrastination, it is definitely easier said than done. Although my level of procrastination has been lessened to some extent, it was not enough. I still waited until the last minute to start on any sort of homework, even the important internal assessments. My severe problem of procrastination has even affected my preparation for the exams. I had to finish up all sorts of projects and homework right before the exams instead of preparing the material for my exam. It has affected my Mathematics grade severely because I lacked proper and constant practice. After my exams, when I reflected upon my terrible results, I have once again traced the problem back to procrastination. Now I am absolutely determined to put this bad habit to a halt once and for all.
The ways that I found out this problem was through means of emotion and reason. Emotion played a huge role in my revealing of this problem as the first emotion that came to mind when I realized that my assignment was late was anger and disappointment in myself. Later, when I reflected upon the course of events that lead to my eventual tardiness, I discovered that those mere few games of Tetris have wasted crucial minutes in which I could have been working on my assignment.
My goal is to keep my procrastination to a minimum in order to allow myself more time to study. Next year’s IB1 is going to be tough and procrastination is merely disrupting my chances of good grades. Below is a diagram that depicts choices one can take in an IB course. In IB, you only can choose two of good grades, social life and enough sleep. However, I believe that all three can actually be chosen, if I can manage my time well enough.
The Essay on Problem Energizers
It takes an energizer to become aware of problems that arise everywhere. Unless individuals are sensitive to a situation, the problem could not be grasped. (Zanzountaha)
My knowledge and my urge to stop procrastination once and for all has affected my view of this world dramatically. I now know that time management is the essence, that without it, my IB student life would be quite difficult.
Conclusion:
In summation, through the events of handing in my Economics homework late, along with not having enough time to study for my exams, I have comprehended that if the bad habit of procrastination is ridden, I can greatly boost my scores in general. Moreover, I will be able to get ample sleep then, something that I definitely lack. My knowledge about anti-procrastination fits in the category of Ethics, and my ways of knowing are reason and emotion respectively. I will definitely try my best to stop procrastinating as after reflecting upon the events throughout the year, I know for sure that my student life would ease up if there was no procrastination.
