Practice makes perfect, at least that is how the saying goes. How much practice makes perfect, though? According to Goslin (May 22, 2005), by practicing something that we want to do, we will build raw talent and a strong, almost fervent, desire for success. As a student, I deem that homework and practice are related, connected by the context when students are learning on their own and applying new knowledge. By practicing homework repeatedly, students are engaged in applying new learning and the goal of practice itself is for students to get as close to mastery as possible.
Homework is meant to help students practice and reinforce their daily learning and develop good study habits (Smith, n. d).
However, is that true that homework is really helpful to students? Homework has been around for a very long time. It is set and traced as a tradition of having teachers assigning work and students completing it. Most people and students believe that it is necessary for teachers, tutors, and professors to give out homework. Teachers should give out homework because it helps the students better understand the subject that they are studying.
When a teacher gives out homework and looks over it, the teacher can observe the student’s advantages and disadvantages. Because of this, teachers can help students if they have disadvantages in a certain area, so that the students can improve their study skills and teach themselves that learning can take place anywhere, not just in school buildings. In addition, students can be able to express positive attitudes towards the value of school stress and also foster independence and responsibility when they are completing their homework.

Despite all the benefits for students to have homework, conversely I believe that assigning homework is actually harmful to the students because it causes students’ stress and exhaustion, lack of time for other activities, and possible loss of interest in learning. Stress and exhaustion is one of the primary causes of why homework is harmful to students. This is because, teachers often assign an excessive amount of homework to their students in a short period time.
According to Gurnam, Chan and Parmjit (2011), the amount of time allocated for the students to complete their homework must be reasonable and considerately taken into some factors such as pupils’ capability, subjects’ level of complexity and variety of homework assignment. This obviously shows that the large amount of homework given by teachers without any considerations causes students to be up until midnight and they may even have to wake up early the next morning to finish their homework, leaving them with an insufficient amount of sleep and tiredness.
Besides, a lot of homework usually means a lot of books to carry and carrying large amounts of weight daily at a young age can do a lot of damage and tiredness because bones are still in development. As cited in Longley (n. d), Dr. Scott Bautch, a chiropractor from Wausau, claimed that many children nowadays are carrying a quarter of their body weight over their shoulders for a hefty portion every day. This causes the students to feel more tired as bulging backpacks offer a significant risk to children.
Thus, having an excessive amount of homework is very harmful to students as this will lead them to have pressure and tiredness. Moreover, homework also takes away time that a student could use to participate in activities they love. As cited in Kamhi (October 18, 2008), Kohn (2006), stated that some experts believe that homework leaves less time for other activities such as reading for gratification, developing social skills by making friends, playing games, exercising, resting, or just being a child.

As a result, students will stay live in tedious life as homework demands can limit the time available for them to spend on other social activities and community involvement. Furthermore, homework also limits family times among students. Family time is important to a growing child. Without time spent as a family unit, especially for the elementary and middle school age, the family becomes fragmented on how they relate to each other. Without family time, social problems can crop up and the family unit can be compromised by lack of time spent together.

This noticeably shows that time spent for students to have dinner with their parents or doing other activities that most families should do together is limited as children nowadays do not have time to take a break from their homework schedule and the only interaction they have with their parents involves arguments about homework. On top of that, it is clearly depicted that homework is harmful to students as excessive amounts of time spent on completing homework can reduce quality time in students’ ife. There is no doubt that students could not concentrate in class since they would tend to do their uncompleted homework when the teachers are teaching. This is because, when students do not focus the subject that was being taught by the teachers, they will not understand and take longer time to finish the homework and finally lose their interest in the subject overall.
Besides, doing something over and over again will lead the students to feel bored and they will resort to copying homework or cheating on tests. According to Manzi (January 22, 2009), children will copy off each other to get their work completed. This typically happens among the students as the time spent doing the homework dulls them after they put in a long day at school to learn new things and due to this, they just copy their friends’ work to get their work done in easier way. Anybody cannot stop them from copying if they have a choice between doing homework which takes few hours or copying homework which only takes ten minutes at most.

Thus, it can be concluded that having too much homework will make the students to lose interest on subjects that they learn. In a nutshell, students will definitely encounter the harmfulness of homework in terms of losing interest in learning, reducing time for other important activities and also causing them to exhaust and stress. Without full guidelines, students will feel that homework only a burden to them and in a short while will cause them to lose interest in the subjects they learn.
Besides, students that are overloaded with homework will lack of time from doing other activities as they are struggling to complete a bunch of homework that is assigned by their teachers and probably take longer time to finish them. Students will also feel stress as not every homework is exciting because some of them are necessarily based on the old “drill and kill” model. All in all, homework only brings harmfulness to the children as it affects on students’ love of learning. It is bad enough that they have to go to school in the first place but once the last bell rings, teachers are supposed to just let them be a child.
