They say that it is the challenges in life and past experiences which shape us to become the people we are today. I may not have learned from my own mistakes but I have done well to learn from the examples of others. As such, I have come to a point in life that many people have not. I have made a firm decision to recommit myself to pursuing my dreams. While there are those who believe that with an ounce of luck and a ton of persistence anything can be accomplished, I believe that there is no reason to expend so much energy and rely on luck.
I believe in taking hold of my destiny and carving out a future for myself based on the decisions that I make in life. Life is simply too short and too precious to be left to luck alone. As such, I have decided to dedicate my life to the study of photonics. While I may not have been one of those kids who expressed an innate talent or interest for this field at a young age, I was one of those who tirelessly devoted hours upon hours studying and understanding the field of photonics.
My strong foundation in optics and photonics, as shown by my experience as a research assistant at Nanjing University, has provided me with a unique opportunity to advance my career to unexpected heights. This is why I want to pursue a career in photonics. The accomplishment of these objectives gives me a strong sense of achievement and as such, I feel that these are things that I need to accomplish in order to meet my personal goals. My experience in the field of photonics research is mainly from my tenure as a research assistant at the Nanjing University.

During this time, I worked in the laboratory of advanced photonic and electronic materials. I was part of the team that worked on a number of successful projects such as focusing on growth and characterization of SiC grown on Si(111) by CVD, determining the effect of hydrogen and nitrogen on the growth behavior, determining the effect of composite gas on the growth behavior and the analysis of the results of XRD and Raman scattering. These projects gave me an opportunity to witness firsthand the application of photonic principles to industrial projects.
I am not limited by this experience, however, as I also worked as a summer student at the photonics laboratory in Professor Helmy’s Group at University of Toronto. From the period of May 2008 to August 2008, I supervised and worked with the group that was in charge of Matlab modeling for Gaussian beam characterization with cylindrical lenses and spherical lenses, generate beam profile, E-field and coupling efficiency with various kind of waveguides.
I also participated in second harmonic generation process and analysis for waveguides as well as Fabry-Perot measurements for waveguides. I am confident in stating that these projects, while difficult, were all successfully completed. As a student interested in the field of photonics, I am well aware of the growing importance of this field in the world today. In Europe, several billions have been allocated for the research and development sector of photonics.
I feel that in order to take advantage of the growing demand for professionals in this market it is necessary for me to get the training and expertise that a Ph. D from this prestigious university has to offer. Furthermore, one of the most important considerations for me applying for the Ph. D program at Rochester lies in learning new and flexible modes of thinking and to seek constructive answers to perplexing questions. I believe this is where I will receive the most updated professional training and enrich my professional expertise.
As the world continues to change and the workplace becomes more and more challenging and competitive, it becomes imperative for anyone looking for a successful career to not only have the drive to succeed but also the training and expertise to do so. As such, I feel that I have had several great ideas in the past and still continue to have, but have, unfortunately not been able to turn these ideas into reality. If given the opportunity, I look forward to being able to work with the likes of Katie Hasman who was introduced new breakthroughs in this field with her work on precision optics manufacturing.
The Report on Social Work Program Evaluation
The National Association of Social Workers (NASW), outlines the primary mission of Social Work “is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty” (2008).1 The identity of the profession is somewhat vague at times, as the profession can fill many ...
I am confident that being under the tutelage of a Harvey M. Pollicove Memorial Scholarship will grant me the knowledge that I seek. I also look forward to working with Professor Emil Wolf, who is the Wilson Professor of Optical Physics. His book entitled, Introduction to the Theory of Coherence and Polarization of Light, presents a novel and interesting take on previously existing theories as well as providing a unified treatment of the concepts of coherence and polarization.
I believe I am the right candidate for your highly esteemed program not only because of the close connection between my current undergraduate program and your postgraduate program but also because of the excellent academic record that I have achieved in my years at Nanjing University. My strong electrical engineering and photonic studies background provides me a solid foundation that presents avenues for growth in your program. My determination to succeed and perseverance toward my goals will help me in the study of photonics in order to further my other goals in life.
