I was only in elementary school when my mother was stricken with malaria. This was hardly unexpected; after all, a large number of our city’s population had been suffering from this illness. However, it did not matter how widespread the disease had become. The most important thing was that my mother was its latest victim and was in critical condition. My family and I were determined to do everything in our power to help her, so we brought her to the nearest hospital for treatment. Her doctor treated her attentively, ensuring that all her needs were met and that my family’s concerns were addressed.
After extensive treatment, my mother‘s condition improved and she was soon on her way to a full recovery. As I thanked the doctor who had done so much to treat my mother, I began to wonder the fate of those who fail to seek proper medical intervention. Time passed by and I grew older and became more matured. I developed a better understanding of why there are situations like these that exist in a world where technology has become so advanced. This is when I began to witness the detrimental effects of poor health.
I knew that only a doctor’s intervention could prevent communities such as mine from succumbing to devastating illnesses. Even though medical treatment and preventive health measures may avoid widespread fatality, many people do not possess the financial or educational resources to receive the health care that everyone deserves. This desire to make a difference in the lives of many prompted me to matriculate into medical school. I was fascinated with studying the basic science courses and enjoyed learning about the structure and function of the human body.
The Term Paper on Alternative Medicine Body Medical Doctors
Millions of North Americans have come to trust the accomplishments of medical science to care for their fragile bodies. Why should they not Using the scientific method, doctors have made it possible to bypass your coronary arteries; to change your heart valves; and to repair or replace your heart, liver and kidneys and most of your joints. Cosmetic surgeons can leave you looking half your age. ...
I also became engrossed in understanding different disease processes and their pathophysiology. By the time I began taking my clinical science courses, I had already developed strong medical knowledge and became excited about implementing my acquired knowledge into the clinical setting. During my internal medicine rotation, I became fascinated with the systematic approach used to determine acute and chronic diseases. I observed as my attending physician, Dr. Getachew, treated a patient who had intense joint pain, stiffness, and fatigue.
These symptoms could have indicated several different illnesses, but by using his powers of deductive reasoning and providing good interactions with the patient, he was able to determine that this patient’s disease was autoimmune in nature and that rheumatoid arthritis was the likely diagnosis. I was very inspired how my attending physician had this remarkable skill to methodically discover the cause of the patient’s symptoms in an efficient manner and that he could prepare an effective treatment plan.
Since then, I have appreciated the importance of critical reasoning and have tried to master my differential diagnosis skills in the same effective manner. During that time, I began strengthening my differential diagnosis abilities and have taken strong measures to ensure better knowledge and understanding of the field of medicine. In my final year of medical school, I had the opportunity to participate in an academic research by investigating the Zeway factory workers’ knowledge and perception of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Imaging Techniques in Medicine Research Paper
Engineering in Medicine: Evoked PotentialsToday, there are many forms of imaging available to the medical profession. Among the more well-known types include x-rays, ultrasounds, CTscans, PETscans, and the most groundbreaking, the MRI. One lesser known form of imaging is the technique of evoked potentials. The evoked potential uses stimulation of the body to force activity in the brain. Using ...
A poster presentation describing the transmission and pathophysiology of this deadly disease was prepared. I also helped coordinate a widespread vaccination program in Nazaret, Ethiopia, and volunteered my time in providing social services to home-bound, terminally ill HIV/AIDS patients. This community involvement helped solidify my communication skills and my commitment to education. My hard work and determination to succeed eventually paid off when I secured an internship for internal medicine after the completion of medical school.
This training allowed me to gain valuable experience in several specialties including general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, and pediatrics. I also had the opportunity to apply my medical knowledge and clinical skills. My confidence in assessing illnesses and administering treatment to patients quickly increased. I was new to the United State’s health care system until the time I joined the research team lead by Dr. Rajiv Agarwal at Indiana University Hospital where I have been working as a research assistant since May 2008.
The research involved accurate measurement of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) by measuring iothalmate clearance rate for relatively longer period of time, as well as the study of the rate of decline of kidney function on chronic kidney patients taking oral versus intravenous iron. This research paved way for me to experience direct interaction with patients and fellow physicians, and I was able to attend grand rounds to increase my knowledge and get familiar with the country’s hospital care settings. I am also well acquainted with computerized patient record system (CPRS) and various techniques like electrocardiogram and echocardiography.
I am interested in an internal medicine residency program that can provide me with exceptional training in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. I am confident that my analytical expertise, my previous researches and volunteer works, and my internship training will help me advance quickly and perform excellently. Though I realize that I still have much to learn about the field of internal medicine, I know that through this internal medicine residency program, I can greatly contribute my skills, talents, and learnings wherever I will go in the future.
The Essay on Nursing Home Research Travel Medicine
On the first day that I walked into the Church Nursing Home, I was unsure of what to expect. A jumble of questions ran through my mind simultaneously: Is this the right job for me? Will I be capable of aiding the elderly residents? Will I enjoy what I do? A couple of hours later, these questions were largely forgotten as I slowly cut chicken pieces and fed them to Frau Meyer. Soon afterwards, I ...
