Once upon time there was a little boy named Matt. He was 8 years old. He was upstairs in his room doing his homework at 10:00 o’clock at night. He heard a knock on the door to his closet. He opened the door and a monster came out. The monster was big, black, green and hairy. The monster tried to eat Matt. Matt got away. Matt ran out of his room closing and locking the door behind him. He ran to his Mom. “Mom, Mom, there is a monster in my room!” he said frantically. “Oh Matt, there are no such things as monsters. Go back to your room and finish your homework right now,” his mother said. “Mom, there is a monster in my room. I won’t go back there until the monster is out of my room!” Matt said. “I will go with you and show you that there are no monsters in your room,” said Mom.
Mom took Matt by the hand and took him upstairs. Matt was terrified as his mother opened the door. Mom was right! There was no monster in his room. “See?” she said. “Stop making excuses and get your homework done.” Matt went back to doing his homework and tried to get the silly idea of monsters out of his head. Mom went back downstairs to finish doing the dishes. No sooner had Matt finished math problem number five, where he added 18 + 9 =, he heard another, even louder, knocking on the closet door. Matt knew that it was the monster but he open the door.
Matt was right, it was the monster. The monster tried to eat Matt but Matt got away again. Matt ran out of his room forgetting to close and lock the door this time. He ran to his Dad and made his Dad come and see that there really is a monster in his room. When Matt and his Dad got to Matt’s room, Matt made his Dad search every corner of the room including the closet. No monster! “Matt, you silly boy, finish your homework and stop with this foolishness.” His Dad said, “I’m going down to finish reading the newspaper.”

After his Dad left, Matt searched his room again. The monster really was gone. Where could the monster be? Where could the monster be? Maybe he is in your closet. I wouldn’t open the door if I were you!
