Parents, educators and many others are concerned about the rank of programs performed on T.V. They fear that it may cause youngster to perceive bad influences by watching unsuitable programs. Serviceable functions are being provided by different associations to solve this problem, such as using rating systems. The rating systems will help parents monitor their children’s T.V. viewing in many ways.
First of all, a rating system is used to let parents decide what their children should watch. Many rating systems and program-blocking technologies are being developed by different organizations. A useful technology that’s being used is the V-chip, in which it enables parents to block out T.V. programs that they don’t wish their children to watch. Another rating system addressed by The American Medical Association (AMA) it’s also being provided that presents specific warnings, regarding to violent content, etc. Parents began seeing the symbols “TV-Y,” “TV-Y7” and “FV”. What does each of them mean? “TV-Y,” are suitable programs for all children, “TV-Y7” are shows that are only for children older than 7, “FV” are programs that carry fantasy violence. A lot of parents do not have a good understanding of the system or what some ratings meant and there are changes they’d like to see made. As stated in graph B of The 1997 Survey of Parents and Children that parents of preschoolers have a 23.7% of positive view of TV quality, which implies that many of them pay little or no attention to the exposure of television violence. The only issue at the moment is that it’s not yet set whether all broadcasters and cable networks will agree to the same rating system; however many of them support the use of the V-chip technology.
The Homework on How important are parents in a child’s life?
Parents How important are parents in a child’s life? In my opinion, parents are extremely important in the raising of a child. Without the presence of a parent, a child will have a very difficult time growing up. There are essential things that a child has to be provided with. Those needs, I classified them into three important categories: Love Love is absolutely necessary in a good parent- ...
A plausible reason of why rating systems will help parents monitor their children’s T.V. viewing is that it prevents youngster from adapting negative values or morals because it’s proven that the causes of violence in society are mainly caused by aggressive behaviors. Children learn at very young ages to laugh at violence. They often think that problems could be resolved quickly with violence because in violent programs the director tends to portray the villains with more powers by the usage of weapons, such as knives, guns and etc. The shooting case of the two high school students that happened in Oregon long time ago is a good example. Children are very sensitive, they learn what they perceive and impress them the most. Not only they’d be adapting to violence, but also associating with the use of drugs, alcohol and cigarettes, which are harmful for their health. According to graph A of The 1997 Survey of Parents and Children, 40.7% of American Children have televisions in their bedrooms, which means that half of the children have a high possibility of watching prohibited programs without the consent of their parents or simply because their parents are not alert.
At last, the rating system will help parents monitor their children’s TV viewing because it limits their time on not watching inappropriate programs and spend their time on studying. T.V. is a great influence in children’s daily lives because they do learn a lot from T.V. programs. Youngsters who devote their time on watching T.V. have less time on reading, playing, doing homework and communicating with adults. With the distraction of the T.V. children may be discouraged from learning and their academic performance would automatically be lacking off. Most adolescent parents have a negative view of T.V. quality because as it’s illustrated in graph B, Parents’ View of TV Quality statistics show that 37.9% of parents agree with the comment. Many healthy programs contain educational helps to manipulate children on learning numbers, letters, vocabularies and how to identify themselves. A lot of these programs help them to distinguish what’s wrong and right and it also teaches them good moralities. As Margaret Loesch stated, “We felt [the rule] was appropriate, because it was an important issue and because we’re parents,” It’s helpful to limit them from this case, so they won’t spend more time in front of a TV set than in a classroom or studying.

In brief, many associations and organizations have done and put a lot of efforts to help parents monitor their children’s T.V. viewing. With the rating systems parents had lessen their pressure of worrying from what their children watch, but at the same time it stirs up the tension of some associations because they fear that using rating systems may lead to censorship as Rosalyn Weinman stated, “There is no way that there will be any consistency in application or any consistency in its use,” however with the help of rating systems it’s better than nothing and as a matter of fact it’s really helping the parents in many ways.
