Most people take for granted that childhood should be a carefree time of life devoted to learning and play. Childhood is a time to play, to learn, to grow; a time when all children should have the chance to develop their potential an enjoy bright plans for their future. However, in India childhood is a lost dream for more than 50 million children. Children are forced to work long hours for a little or no compensation.
The economic exploitation of child labor is an insult to humanity. All over the world children continue to work, putting at stake their education, their health, their mental and physical development, and their lives. Millions of them work under hazardous conditions.
What are children doing in terms of work? Many of them work long hours every day of the week. More than half of the working children toil for nine hours or more per day. A large majority, around 70 percent of child workers, are unpaid family workers. The younger the children, the lower the payment is. The vast majority of working children are employed on the streets and in the factories.
Child labor is a complex problem and the causes are multidimensional. Among the causes are: poverty, lack of education, globalization, and discrimination based on caste, class, and gender.
In my opinion, it is everybody’s responsibility to save humanity. Governments should pay more attention to child labor, ratify and enforce laws protecting children, and providing them pleasant childhood! In order to create a world where there is no child labor, the basis causes of this problem needed to be solved. Child labor should be eliminated by improving school facilities, improving the literacy rate and strengthening the legal system of those countries.
