People with disabilities face barriers in accessing physical recreation probably more than any other group. They face barriers mainly because of how inflexible their ability is to participate in sport- regarding to their type of disability in mental and physical health. Some common barriers include the lack of early experiences in sport (this varies between individuals and whether a disability is from birth or acquired later in life); lack of understanding and awareness of how to include people with a disability in sport, plus the limited opportunities and programmes for participation, training and competition and, notably, the lack of accessible transportation.
The disabled are very much known into becoming an isolated group to sport. Not much people of this group are welcomed into sporting events because people don’t make it accessible enough for them. To overcome these barriers and to ensure access for disabled people it is important to consider the following factors. Firstly, programme accessibility should be thought about to prevent disabled people being turned away because of their physical ability. There should be specific programmes of fitness and sport for the disabled to suit their needs, comfort and ability. Secondly, renovating sport facilities with special ramps for instance would be a way for them to access physical recreation easier-especially if they’re in a wheelchair. And thirdly, for those who are unfortunate to making their own way to regular physical recreation it would be advisable to arrange some sort of transportation in order for the disabled to access regular physical recreation

Similarly, the Elderly is another group facing barriers that limit them from accessing regular physical recreation. They share some restrictions that the disabled have like, for instance, not being able to get to the sport facilities and the type of sporting programmes because of their physical abilities since they’re old aged. Although the regular physical recreation would be beneficial to the elderly as it improves health and maximise socialisation to prevent isolation, the disabled may have more priority because they need to sustain their fitness as many disabled people have a difficult life anyways.
