In short, you pay either a fixed fee or a sliding scale fee, sometimes called ‘ad valorem’. An example of how a fixed fee works is that when you perform account payments at an Absa ATM, you’ll pay a fixed fee per transaction, whether you pay R100,00 or R1000,00. With a sliding scale fee, when you withdraw money from an Absa ATM on certain products, you pay a base fee for the transaction itself plus a fee based on the value of the transaction. An example is the ATM cash withdrawal on a current account. There is a R3,95 base fee for the transaction plus a R1,15 fee per R100,00 withdrawn, which eans a R500,00 cash withdrawal will cost you R9,70 (R3,95 + 5 x R1,15).
