Politics as a term is generally applied to the art or science of running governmental or state affairs. You don’t become a leader just like that. If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more then you are a leader. When these two words are combined together, then we get political leaders. So, a political leader is one who works for the people of his/her country in order to build up a progressive nation. But a leader also has a personal life. At some moments there can be clash between the public and his private interests. If the leader gives priority to personal interests, then he is called to be corrupt.
Here I am talking about two political leaders. One of them is Mr.Rahul Gandhi and the other one is Mr.L.K.Advani. They come from rival political parties. Both of these leaders have a major role to play in their respective political parties.
Background
Rahul Gandhi, born in Delhi on 19 June 1970, is the member of the Parliament of India, representing the Amethi constituency in Uttar Pradesh. Gandhi is the general-secretary of the Indian National Congress. He is the grandson of Feroze Gandhi and Indira Gandhi, and fourth-generation scion of the Nehru-Gandhi family.
The Essay on Gandhi A Leader On Non violence
GANDHI: A LEADER ON NON-VIOLENCE Throughout history the great charismatic leaders who were also forces of good that changed the world for the better can be considered in this light to be socialized charismatic leaders. Gandhi for example, fits the category of the selfless individual who did not rule over people by force, intimidation, or manipulation. He had selfless goals, the liberation of India ...
Lal Krishna Advani born on 8 November 1927, in Karachi known as L.K Advani is a Veteran Indian politician. He is the former president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is currently the major opposition party in the Indian Parliament. Both these leaders have an age difference of about 43 years which is a long period of time. This obviates the fact that they have entirely different views on what should be done to improve on the present conditions of the country.
Educational Qualifications
Education has a formative effect on how one thinks, feels or acts. As a leader one should be able to think, feel and act in the proper sense. This makes educational qualifications a very important criterion for the selection of the leaders. Unfortunately, there is no such rule in India. These two leaders are highly qualified for the job.
Rahul Gandhi attended St. Columba’s School, Delhi before entering The Doon School in Dehradun (Uttarakhand) from 1981–83 and home schooled thereafter. Rahul Gandhi joined St. Stephen’s College, Delhi in 1989 for his undergraduate education but moved to Harvard University after he completed the first year examinations. He shifted to Rollins College due to security concerns and completed his B.A. in 1994. He further went on to obtain MPhil from Trinity College, Cambridge University in 1995.
L.K.Advani completed his early schooling from Saint Patrick’s High School, Karachi, and then enrolled at D G National College in Hyderabad. He graduated in Law from Government Law College, Bombay University.
Political Career of Rahul Gandhi
Rahul Gandhi entered the politics in March, 2004. At the time, this move generated surprise among political commentators, who had regarded his sister Priyanka as being the more charismatic and likely to succeed. It generated speculation that the presence of a young member of India’s most famous political family would reinvigorate the Congress party’s political fortunes among India’s youthful population. In his first interview with foreign media, Gandhi portrayed himself as a person who would unite the country and condemned “divisive” politics in India, saying that he would try to reduce caste and religious tensions. Gandhi was appointed a general secretary of the All India Congress Committee on 24 September 2007 in a reshuffle of the party secretariat. The person who wants to be a leader must develop the quality of taking responsibility. In 2012 UP State assembly elections, he took the responsibility of the loss.
The Essay on Gandhi Independence British India
Describe the different approaches used by M. K. Gandhi and Ho Chi Minh to rid their respective countries from the political control of Western nations. Explain how and why each was motivated to follow very different paths to the same goal. Mohandas Gandhi, born in 1869, was a man who saw himself as a moral teacher in the quest for religiosity and truth. He led the independence of India from the ...
Youth Politics
He is also called as the “Yuvraaj” of India. In September 2007 when he was appointed general secretary in charge of the Youth Congress (IYC) and the National Students Union of India (NSUI), Gandhi promised to reform youth politics. In his attempt to prove himself as a youth leader in November 2008, Gandhi held interviews at his 12, Tughlaq Lane residence in New Delhi to handpick at least 40 people who will make up the think-tank of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC), an organization that he has been keen to transform since he was appointed general secretary.
Under Rahul Gandhi, IYC and NSUI has seen a dramatic increase in members from a two lakhs to twenty five lakhs. This means that now more young people are ready to join politics and serve the society.
Land Acquisition Protests Arrest
On 11 May 2011 Rahul Gandhi was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police at Bhatta Parsaul village after he turned out in support of agitating farmers demanding more compensation for their land being acquired for a highway project. This is not the only case in which he was found helping the poor and the needy. He also keeps on visiting small villages where he listens to the problems of the villagers. He eats food prepared by them and stays at their homes in the night. So, he basically leads life of a villager on that day. This way he comes to know of the grievances of the common man who elected him. The word sympathy can be best defined as sharing the feelings of others (especially feelings of sorrow or anguish).
The successful leader must be in sympathy with his followers. Moreover, he must understand them and their problems. This would make him build policies which would prove highly beneficial. This is a technique which I think every leader should learn from him.
View on Lokpal
Rahul Gandhi opines that the Lokpal should be made a constitutional body and it should be made accountable to the Parliament, just like the Election Commission. He also feels that Lokpal alone cannot root out corruption.
The Essay on Gandhi Ghandi Violence India
The Great Soul Most of today's hero's like Batman, Zena and others are all fighters or warriors, but Mahatma Gandhi ended the British rule over his country, India, without striking a single blow. Instead he used the principle of non-violence and civil disobedience.' An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.' Gandhi believed that the best way to gain respect and honour from the ...
View on Terrorism
He believes that it is very difficult to stop every single terrorist attack. The idea is that we have to fight terrorism at the local level. Local terrorism grows when people are not treated properly and hence they turn misanthropic.
So, if all the people are given their rights then the whole problem of terrorism can be solved at the local level. If the problem at the local level is solved, then it could completely eradicate terrorism at the global level.
Social Views
Rahul Gandhi always believes that the main reason of the social evils that still prevail in our country is illiteracy. This is the reason why he lays great emphasis on education. He has also played a key role in the building up of strict rules meant to eradicate these social evils from our country.
How respected he is…
In 2008, senior Congress leader Veerappa Moily mentioned “Rahul-as-PM” idea when the PM of India Manmohan Singh was still abroad. In July 2012, Union Law Minister, Salman Khursheed stated that Rahul Gandhi should provide a “new ideology” to meet the present day challenges, the Congress party was facing. These statements very well state how much the people of his party respect him.
He won the election from Amethi, the seat which had been held by his mother until she transferred to the neighboring seat of Rae Bareilly. This shows the amount of confidence his mother, Sonia Gandhi, had on him. He also didn’t disappoint as he won with a landslide majority, retaining the family stronghold at that constituency.
Leadership Qualities of Rahul Gandhi
The following are the major attributes of leadership possessed by Rahul Gandhi:
Infinite Courage: In fact, no follower will like to be dominated by a leader who lacks self-confidence, courage and wisdom. No intelligent follower will be dominated by such a leader for very long.
Self-Control: The person who controls self-rules others! The man who can’t control himself can never control others. In fact, self-control sets a mighty example for one’s followers, which the more intelligent will emulate.
The Essay on Charismatic Leadership Leaders Followers Leader
How to be a Charismatic Leader What do Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy, Charles Manson and David Kouresh all have in common? By definition, they were all charismatic leaders. Charisma is the result of specific behaviors on the part of the leaders, which leads followers to view them as charismatic. In essence, charismatic leaders have a powerful message, an arousing personality style and the ...
Sense of Justice: Without a sense of fairness and justice, no leader can command and retain the respect of his followers. He fought for the villagers of Bhatta Parsaul.
Decision Making: The man, who wavers in his decision, shows that he is not sure of himself, cannot lead others successfully. He is good at decision making and this is the reason why he is a key member in the Central Government.
Doing More: One of the penalties of leadership is the necessity of willingness, upon the part of the leader, to do more than he requires of his followers. His eagerness to work makes him a better leader.
Pleasing Personality: Leaderships calls for respect. A person without a good and pleasing personality will not be respected by his followers for very long. Well, personality can be defined as the complex of all the attributes–behavioural, temperamental, emotional and mental–that characterize a unique individual and without it, a person can neither become an intelligent follower nor a good leader. One can’t be more respectful than Rahul Gandhi.
Sympathy: The word sympathy can be best defined as sharing the feelings of others (especially feelings of sorrow or anguish).
The successful leader must be in sympathy with his followers. Moreover, he must understand them and their problems. His visits to the villages prove his sympathy with the followers.
Responsibility: The person who wants to be a leader must develop the quality of taking responsibility. With responsibility comes power. A leader is assumed to be responsible for the mistakes and the shortcomings of his followers. If he tries to shift the responsibility, he will not remain the leader. He doesn’t shift away from his responsibilities as seen in UP elections.
Cooperation: Without good co-operation and coordination no organized plan could be executed. Thus a successful leader must understand and apply the principles of cooperative efforts and be able to induce his followers to do the same. Leadership calls for power, and power calls for cooperation. He asks his party leaders to co-operate and work together.
Political Career of L.K.Advani
L.K Advani’s life as a politician started in 1947 when he was elected as the Secretary, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Karachi. In 1947, Advani was sent to Matsya-Alwar in Rajasthan, which had witnessed communal violence following partition, to oversee the affairs of the RSS there. So, he wasn’t born in a high class family and moved to India after the partition.
The Essay on Nestle India – Good Food, Good Life
The Indian Fast Moving Consumer Goods sector is the fourth largest and fastest developing sectors in the economy with a total market size in excess of US$ 44.9 billion in 2013 with a growth rate of about 16.2% since 2006. Products which have a quick turnover, and relatively low cost are known as Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG). FMCG products are those that get replaced within a year. The growth ...
Advani became the president of the BJP in 1986. His rise coincided with a growing unease and disquiet with the ruling Congress Party, among the Hindus due the increasing fundamentalism among the minority Muslims. So, he doesn’t like the Muslims as can be judged by his speeches and his party actions. Sensing an opportunity Advani embarked on a new aggressive phase of his politics and by 1991, he had taken the party to new heights.
In 1989, the BJP launched a movement led by Advani on the issue of the Ram Janmabhoomi (the birth place of Rama).
The BJP demanded that a temple dedicated to deity Rama be created at the site of the Babri Masjid where, according to Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), a temple stood till Babur’s invasion of India in 1528. Sunni Central Wakf Board rejected this claim. However, rather than a settling on a political solution to the dispute, the disputed structure was destroyed by a Hindu mob, sparking massive Hindu-Muslim riots. This shows the effect of this great man and the sense of justice he has.
As Union Minister, Advani had a tough time with India facing a string of internal disturbances in the form of terror attacks from neighbouring Pakistan. These problems could never affect his morale and he continued to work according to the country’s needs.
Advani became Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2009. During this period, Advani had to deal with rebellion from within the party. He drew much criticism when he, while on a visit to the Jinnah Mausoleum at Karachi – his town of birth, endorsed Mohammad Ali Jinnah and described him a “secular” leader. This shows the amount of respect he has for the leaders of the past times. He praised him although he knew that it would not serve him well.
In March 2006, following a bomb blast at one of the holiest Hindu shrines at Varanasi, Advani undertook a “Bharat Suraksha Yatra” (Sojourn for National Security), to highlight the alleged failure of the ruling United Progressive Alliance (a Congress led coalition) in combating terrorism. This shows the amount of sympathy he has for his people.
The Term Paper on Politics In India
Democracy is defined as ‘The Government of the people, for the people, and by the people’, but there are many challenges facing democracy in many countries across the world. India is a perfect example of a nation that is ‘fully democratic’ even as it develops and faces several challenges. This paper is divided into two different parts showing the problems facing Indian ...
L.K. Advani stated that as the Leader of the Opposition in a parliamentary democracy, he considered himself as the Prime Ministerial candidate for the general elections. Even at this age, he believes in doing more for the society.
Advani-Vajpayee duo
Through the 90s and the first few years of the 21st century, the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-LK Advani combination steered the BJP to heights it had never before witnessed. Their political relationship provided stability, continuity, experience and authority to a party that was beginning even then, to severely lack a solid second-rung. As Advani himself acknowledged, rarely do two political leaders share such a bond, a working relationship that allows them both to thrive and grow without disturbing the fine balance of that bond.
L.K.Advani worked as an able and trusted lieutenant along with the poet-Prime Minister, Vajpayee to bring depth and gravity to the BJP leadership. It still is, and will be in many ways, the gold standard to which the BJP will hold itself for many years to come. During these years the Highway projects started all over India. They also boosted the sentiments of the people and increased the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of the country. Their policies earned worldwide appreciation.
View on Lokpal
He was also in favour of a strong Lokpal Bill in order to bring back the black money from the foreign banks into India in order to speed up the development.
Rath Yatras
Popularly known in India as the Eternal yatri or Eternal Charioteer, L.K. Advani has taken 6 yatras throughout India.
* Ram Rath Yatra- L.K. Advani started his first Rath Yatra from Somnath, Gujarat on 25 September 1990 to finally reach Ayodhya on October 30, 1990. The yatra has been linked to the Mandir-Masjid dispute centered on Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid site at Ayodhya. The BJP and Advani, however, focused the yatra on the secularism–communalism debate. The yatra was stopped in UP by Mulayam Singh Yadav when he ordered shooting of kar sewaks.
* Janadesh Yatra- Four Yatras named Janadesh Yatra started on 11 September 1993 from four corners of country. L.K. Advani led this yatra from Mysore. Travelling through 14 States and two Union Territories, the yatris congregated at Bhopal on September 25 in a massive rally. The purpose of Janadesh Yatrawas to seek the people’s mandate against the two Bills, the Constitution 80th Amendment Bill and the Representation of People (Amendment) Bill.
* Swarna Jayanti Rath Yatra- the Swarna Jayanti Rath Yatra by Mr. Advani travelled across India between May and July 1997. According to Mr. Advani, the Yatra was conducted in celebration of 50 years of Indian Independence and also to project the BJP as a party committed to good governance.
* Bharat Uday Yatra- the Bharat Uday Yatra took place in the run-up to the 2004 Lok Sabha Elections.
* Bharat Suraksha Yatra- the BJP launched a nationwide mass political campaign in the form of the Bharat Suraksha Yatra from April 6 to May 10, 2006. It consisted of two Yatras – one led by L.K. Advani, Leader of the Opposition (Lok Sabha), from Dwaraka in Gujarat to Delhi; and the other led by Rajnath Singh, then the President of the BJP, from Jagannath Puri in Orissa to Delhi. The Yatra was focused on left wing terrorism, minority politics, corruption, protection of democracy and price rise.
* Jan Chetna Yatra- the Jan Chetna Yatra was launched on 11 October 2011 from Sitab Diara, Bihar. The BJP states the purpose of Jan Chetna Yatra is to mobilise public opinion against corruption of the UPA government and put BJP agenda of good governance and clean politics before the people of India.
His Qualities
The qualities of this great leader are as follows:
Indefatigability: A leader has a lot of responsibilities and in order to fulfill them, he should be indefatigable and should never give up when the times are bad.
Intrepidity: There are a great number of people who would try to scare you to keep away doing something in politics. In that case, intrepidity becomes an important attribute for a good leader.
Stoicism: A leader should be courageous and should keep his pains and sufferings to himself. Mr. Advani is one great leader who possesses this quality.
Magnanimity: A demagogue should be big-hearted and small things should never hinder his progress.
Planning: A successful leader must plan his work and work his plan. A leader who moves by guesswork, without practical, definite plans, is comparable to a ship without a rudder. Sooner or later he will land on the rocks. He brought his party to new heights. So, he is a pretty good planner.
Conclusion
These two great leaders have some values according to which they act. Most of our present leaders are corrupt and face criminal charges. This is the reason for the worse conditions where every foreign country calls us as politically unstable. Our goals of becoming a superpower would never be fulfilled if these conditions still prevail. Everybody dreams of the days when Lord Rama ruled. If we can have most of the leaders of the stature of these two gentlemen then we could surely be successful in realization of our dreams.
