I understand that I am a banyan tree which grows everywhere. When I was young, many people came to me and worshipped me. I know that it is myth. From ancient time people personify the trees as the living being. As to this, they would light an earthen lamp and put it near my root, do some ritual gestures, say their prayers and go away. Thus, they wanted to win the grace to god. As I started growing up bigger the garden authority put a wall like boundary around me. This was done to protect me from being destroyed the pleasure of lot a company daily and the great honor of being worshipped by a large number of believers every day. Now I am full grown tree and the low wall during my childhood has been converted into a broad platform all around me. Here, on the platform people sit and say their prayers and relax. At times they also consume their temple prosad when they sitting on this platform.

All day people come and go and spend with joy. People move around me. They talk about me. Once upon a time some old men came to see me and talked about my birth. I listened to it spell-bound. Sometimes the youths sit under me and whisper their love talk. Some of them are agreed to marry with each other then I am the witness of their marriage.

It is matter of great regret that I have faced a threat of fungus. A large part of my body has been infested with fungus, which the garden authorities believe could eventually damage the entire tree. First noticed about two years ago, the infection could have originated from illegal sewer pipes set up by encroachers along the wall of the garden. The waste carried by the pipes is discharged into an open canal that encircel the garden and feeds water to its 24 lakes. Treatment has been started on an emergency basis and some of the infected props have already been cured, garden derector, Himadri Shekhar Debnath told ‘TOI’.
