On August 6 1928 Andrew Warhola was born in Pittsburgh. His mother and father were Carpatho- Rusyn immigrants from East Slovakia. When he was just 9 years old Andy developed an interest in photography. He also started taking violin lessons but quit as he didn’t like his teacher. Between 1937 and 1941 he attended free art classes at the Carnegie Institute of technology. When Andy was diagnosed with Sydenham’s chorea and had to stay at home for more than two months. At this time his mother encouraged his interests in art and comics. When he was eleven he began collecting photos of movie stars and kept them in a scrapbook. In 1949, after graduating from Carnegie Tech, he moved to New York City. He began work as a commercial artist under the name Andy Warhol. His published work included drawings for Opera News and Dance Magazine. In 1953, he had hosted his first solo exhibition at the Hugo Gallery, titled Fifteen Drawings Based on the Writings of Truman Capote. Just 30 and Warhol designed the record covers for Kenny Burrell’s Blue Lights and Andy Warhol enterprises were legally incorporated. In 1962 Warhol began his photo silk-screened Marilyn paintings as a tribute to Marilyn Monroe after her tragic death. Warhol then went on to movie making and had stars like Joe Dallesandro and Candy Darling to appear in films. On February 22 1987 Warhol died. According to reports from the news Warhol had been making good progress after a routine gallbladder surgery however he then died in his sleep from a sudden post-operative cardiac arrhythmia.

From a very young age Warhol developed an interest in Art and Photography. Warhol took pictures with the family’s Kodak Brownie camera. He had two older brothers, Pavol, the oldest, was born in Slovakia and Ján was born in Pittsburgh. Pavol’s son, James Warhola went onto become a successful children’s book illustrator. He became a bed-ridden as a child after he was diagnosed Sydenhams chorea, he became an outcast at school developed a bond with his mother. Although at the times when he was restricted to bed, he drew, listened to the radio and created a collection of pictures of movie stars around his bed. Warhol later went on to describe this period as very important in the development of his personality, skill-set and preferences. Throughout the 1950s, he gained fame for his quirky ink drawings of shoe advertisements. These were done using the blotted line technique, and featured in some of his earliest showings at the Bodley Gallery in New York. It was during the 1960s that Warhol began to paint iconic American products such as Campbell’s Soup Cans and Coca-Cola bottles, as well as paintings of celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Jackie Kennedy, Muhammad Ali and Elizabeth Taylor, which he showed interest of from a young age. He also opened “The Factory,” his studio for these years, and draped himself around a wide variety of artists, writers, musicians, and underground celebrities. He began producing prints using the silk-screen method. His work became popular and controversial and pop art wouldn’t be the same if it wasn’t for his pictures.
The one piece of artwork that comes into my head when I think of Andy Warhol is the very famous Marilyn. The reason being is that today it has influenced everything from fashion to interior design. To me Warhol’s view of Monroe after her death is the way that she was seen all over the world, beautiful. It could be the perfect way to tribute her after her death and keep her memory alive. For me Warhol took the fame of Monroe and made it bigger by creating the image. However by duplicating the image known to millions, Warhol almost damaged the uniqueness and realism characteristic of the traditional portrait. So he presented Monroe as a much reproducible image. However this could be seen as not a way to show her as un-unique but to show her constant presence in the media.

I also think the use of bright colours is a good for showing the fun, brightness to Monroe’s personality however I think that his chosen photograph to print doesn’t show Monroe as the fun and sex symbol she was. I think it shows her a more serious type instead of the fun loving character she was, in which she brought out in the ‘dumb blonde’ persona she used to be funny in several of her films. Andy Warhol also used this style of picture with more than one of his pictures, for example Jackie is also done by silk-screening, is centralised and uses limited colours. This reminds me of a fashion range, how the style is the same but the clothing is actually the different.
All of Andy Warhol’s art has had an influence of fashion whether it be just his choice of colours or his actually pictures being printed on clothing. The 1960’s Souper Dress is a good example of this; the dress is made from 80% Cellulose and 20% Cotton. Today the pop art trend has sky rocketed. Marilyn has influenced fashion in a big way; in fact Blumarine’s fall 2009 collection catwalk backdrop was of Andy Warhol-esque portraits of designer Anna Molinari and the collection is filled with bright pastel primary solids and sixties-inspired multicolored prints. This particular piece of art work is based on popular culture, being Marilyn Monroe, and it ironically influenced the album cover, Celebration, for pop icon Madonna. The cover show the image of Marilyn taken and the face has been replaced by Madonna. Nike, the popular sports brand, also used Marilyn as a design for a trainer. Warhol used whatever was popular and happening at the time to create his art, when Marilyn Monroe died he silk-screen printed her face. 46 years later and Barack Obama had just been voted into the white house and Jean-Charles De Castelbajac put a iconic piece into her 2008 collection. A yellow all- sequined dress with a black and white all- sequined image of Barack Obama in the centre. This piece was what mainly got me thinking of Warhol however the rest if the collection and general fashion over the last 20 years has featured bright popping colours and popular bands, singers, cartoon character and even the president have been featured in fashion, which clearly have been inspired by Andy Warhol’s art.
