Agree-Disagree Paper
Can internet dating be considered real love? It has the basis of a relationship, but without human contact. I think that no matter how good two people connect online their actual meeting may not be as passionate as they thought it to be. Therefore, I personally would not use an internet matchmaking service to find a partner.
“If you’ve been together for decades, chances are you met your valentine through family, work or in other traditional ways. But if your relationship is newer, it’s more likely you met online. According to according to a new nationally representative survey of 3009 adults with a romantic partner, the internet has now over taken all the ways people meet.” (E/C chapter 6, pg 27) Love on the Internet can be found in several websites that provide dating services. The number of internet dating sites is continually growing and has become a very successful and effective business. Indeed, online dating has reached new heights with the invention of the webcam and the proliferation of dating websites that offer different features to its customers. With the click of a mouse, you too can become a member of a site and enjoy the perks of online dating.

There are many people who prefer online dating instead of conventional dating because of the advantages it has. Online dating is safer especially for women who often have to deal with lascivious physical contact and malicious glances. You and your date are separated by a computer, with a keyboard and/or a webcam that serve as your only communication tools.
You also don’t have to deal with the usual hassles of going on a live date, such as dressing up and commuting. In online dating, all you need is a reliable Internet connection and you’re all set to go. You can go on an online date wherever and whenever you want. It’s easy and it will not cost you much money.
Internet dating is a something when someone first sees your profile they must like you right away. The way that a viewer of profile reacts will be the key to if they are going to want to go on a date and meet you or if they are just never going to look at the profile again. But the nice thing about these profiles is that you can put what you want people to know about you and what you do not want people to know about you.
Most people’s primary reason for going on an online date is the anonymity that this form of dating offers. You don’t have to tell your date your real name or your real profession. You can be anyone you want to be. The mystery adds to the excitement of dating someone you only know in cyberspace.
So basically anyone that is going to make a profile is going to pump themselves up to be something that they might not really be. (E/C chapter 6, pg 25) Online dating provides an efficient way for people to meet prospective partners and to get to know them through e-mails and chats. Certainly the stigma which was attached to internet dating a few years ago seems to have passed and people are attracted by the advantages of internet dating: having the privacy to ‘look around from the comfort of their own home’, which means ‘you don’t have to meet a middleman or go to an actual dating agency office, which takes a lot of courage’.
Online dating seems to be the easier way to meet people with no stress. (E/C chapter 6, pg 27) The people can say whatever they want and not worry about what the person on the other side is thinking or what weird face they’re making. At the same time all of the information can be false and be dangerous. Some of these people lie about aspects of their life, for instance marital status and age. Often times they deceive these people by neglecting to mention in their profile that they are married or have kids. “When it comes to online date, we’ve come to expect deception.”(E/C, pg 36)

But like any other thing that involves matters of the heart, online dating also has its disadvantages. While the absence of physical contact can provide protection, it can also hinder an intimate relationship. You’ll have to content yourself with emoticons, photos and other images (for chatting), or videos (for webcam dating).
Anyone who’s ever experienced a long-distance affair, which thrives only on letters and phone calls, know that nothing compares to human touch and togetherness when it comes to keeping the flames of romance alive.
The anonymity involved in online dating can also be a double-edged sword. You’re not the only one who’s embracing a different persona online – your date might be doing the exact same, too. You could be dating a maniac, an ex-convict, or even an axe murderer. This is no big deal as long as you stay online, but when an eyeball is set and you go out to meet your date in person, then you could be putting your life in danger.
I’ve seen on television on the show Dateline on NBC that there are many risks on this kind of dating. They investigated and found out that most of these cases the people that thought that they had found real love were just being deceived by their “soul mate”. One of their investigations that struck me was the one of an older lady who was talking online with whom she thought was her future husband. This person told her that he was starting a business for the both of them and all she had to do was to send him thousands of dollars. When she sent the money and was waiting for a response she learned that the person she was talking to was located in Turkey and never to be heard from again. This lady lost thousands of dollars and was now alone. Lesson learned from this situation is to not fall hard for someone until you meet them in person. With limited information about an online potential partner, you often tend to rate them highly and assume they are similar to you. (Lecture 9/27/2010)
