CHALLENGES FOR DENTIST
Most of us are familiar with dentistry from a patient’s perspective. Less familiar are the challenges that dentists face in their profession. Knowing these challenges won’t guarantee an enjoyable experience in the dentist’s chair, but it may increase your appreciation for the doctor’s work.
Firstly, the technology development. Dentists must stay abreast of changing technology, become trained to operate new devices and decide which technology will make the most sense for their patients. This could include dental lasers, digital x-rays and lighting systems. Medical equipment is expensive, so dentists need to be selective in choosing what technology to invest in. Meanwhile, waiting too long to buy new equipment can result in an outdated purchase.
Secondly, dentist must have good communication. Going to the dentist can involve pain, awkwardness and learning that you need to spend large amounts of money to fix a problem you didn’t know you had. Soothing fears and making sure a patient is comfortable. while avoiding mistakes and using the proper procedures, is an ever-present challenge. “I find my greatest challenge is communicating with my patients,” says Dr. Albert J. Kurpis, a cosmetic dentist. Dentists must excel in one-way conversation, because usually patients undergoing dental work are not able to respond.
Lastly, the work environment as a dentist. Dentists are required to spend long hours on their feet, performing repetitive routines that require a high skill level and precision. The routine of working in the same office for 40 or more hours a week can be a challenge for any professional. Staying alert and focused can be a challenge for dentists, who carry out potentially dangerous procedures on a daily basis. In addition, the mouth is a difficult place to work in. “Sometimes it is tough to do the work needed in the dark, wet area called the mouth,” says dentist Jeff Dalin on All Experts.
