Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, said, ‘You can tell the condition of a nation by looking at the status of its women’. And very true, the position a woman holds in a country itself decides the progress of the country. With evolving time Indian woman has surely adopted a major role in the modern society and what has happened is that the comprehensive “identity” of the Indian woman has changed overtime.
India has different complications that put the development of women in a completely altered context than their Western counterparts. Although the key targets remain similar: improvement of health care, education and job opportunities in order to gain equality between men and women in the various settings of public society, the workplace, the school yard and – possibly the most fundamental setting of all – the home. Women are striving to be independent on the equal level of men. The additional complexities that the women of India must also challenge are the caste system, the heavy religious customs, older and more traditional roles of the sexes, as well as the even stronger power that men hold in India. The status was at one time accepted, but with the Western women’s revolution and perception, the role is slowly succeeding in its development through both independent groups of women and national and worldwide organizations based on the goal of gaining equality. They have all accomplished much, but have yet to overthrow the male dominated society. And looking at the current scenario one can easily make out that the Indian woman hold some of the most important position in the country as well outside that.

The current picture is entirely different especially when we look on the urban areas of India. The changes which took place in the urban areas are very good and beneficial which came gradually. India is changing politically, economically and socially, at a swift speed. The condition and status of women in India is slowly changing and rising. They have begun to take due place in free India.
Men and Women are just like the two wheels of a chariot. They are equal in importance and they should work together in life. The one is not superior or inferior to other. Unlike ancient times, though currently in majority of rural areas of India women are treated well, but with the orthodoxy they are cut off from the main stream of social life. Still the rural society does not respect them and give them the due position. They have to suffer and work inside the houses and thus they are completely dependent on men.
This change in time and the process of upgradation of status of women in India started from the time of freedom movements in India. Women effectively and actively took part in the freedom movement of the country along with men. They fought hand in hand with men for India’s independence. Female leaders like Sarojini Naidu, Kasturba Gandhi, Lakshmi Bai and plenty of others raised their voices. Women of all sections and societies revoluted against the ‘purdah’ system. They did not like to live within. They did not like to live within the walls of their houses. As time went on, the status of women in India kept on evolving. They came out and showed to the worlds that women in India could do as much as men, and even better.
Soon after independence, Indian women got back their honour and dignity. The Indian constitution also grants full equality to women. They started taking part in the system and political setup of the country as a full time job. A large number of India women are social workers. Many of them are working as doctors, scientists, engineers, police officers and magistrates. A huge number of women are in teaching profession today. More and more women are getting jobs in MNC’s and offices today and nowadays they are even outperforming men. Now women compete with men in All India Services. They capture most of the merit in university and other exams and have proven that if they are provided with sufficient opportunities and resources then they can show some serious talents. Even our Prime Minister was a women and she had been in office for a long time. Our current president is also a woman Mrs ‘Pratibha Patil’. One of the most famous female names of India i.e. ‘Sonia Gandhi’ has proved her talent and power at the global level and was even named as one of the ‘Most Powerful women of the World’.

The government is also making efforts to make sure there proper education is provided to every girl child and there are no such odd practices prevalent of not making a girl child study as she is to be married at last. The government is totally aware of the fact that what Indian woman is capable of and what she can achieve if provided with all the necessary opportunities. Today educated parents are an asset to the child. Even though she may not be the earning member of the family still an educated woman will surely provide all the essential needs of the child, she is capable of providing the child with his/her basic education. There are no as such old myths prevalent that only men are educated and only they are solely responsible for the education, earning and all other necessities of the family.

The principle of gender equality is contained in the Indian Constitution, legal system and government policies. However, there is still a wide gap between these principles and the reality of the status of women in many communities across India. This is shown by low female literacy rates and high maternal mortality rates, particularly in rural areas. Attitudes need to change at the level of the family. Parents need to ensure that girls as well as boys receive health care, education, training, opportunities and access to resources.
Women today are more practical and rational than earlier. Indian women have never been as expressive and independent as she is today. Women today, consider themselves as the true ‘ardhangini’ or the better half of their husbands. She is more cognizant of his world today and she understands his work pressures. They can adopt any role from being a care-taker/nurturer to a friend in the role of a Mother. It is widely felt that earning power allows them to voice their opinions on bigger decisions. With the exponentially rising women development, surely our society can be happy and prosperous and the nation and the world happier. So in all only one thing can be concluded that the balance has shifted greatly in favour of women and there are playing a major role in every field along with men. The balance might not be totally towards the women but it’s surely balanced equally with men and women on either side.
