Childhood Obesity
Obesity is a problem for society because younger generations are starting to become obese. Obesity is bad for children because it brings about various health issues. The health system often sees children come in with adult health issues like heart disease and joint pain that can be attributed to their weight. Some people think it is the parents’ responsibility to make sure their children eat healthily, while others think it is the fast food restaurants that are at fault for promoting unhealthy eating habits in children in order to make a profit. Moreover, some people say that schools are to blame since they often cut the budget for physical education. No matter who is at fault the children are the victims of this growing epidemic that is sweeping our country. Children are becoming obese and gaining health disorders and diseases that only older people should get like heart disease and diabetes as well as high blood pressure. This problem is taking place all over the world but is especially a problem in United States of America and emerged as a big issue in the 1980s and has been a problem for over 34 years now. “The percentage of overweight children in the United States is growing at an alarming rate, with 1 out of 3 kids now considered overweight or obese” (“Overweight and Obesity”).

Everyone should care about this issue because children are our future leaders and this issue is only shortening their life spans. If people can help solve this problem than we will be creating long, healthy, better lives for children. I think childhood obesity is the parents’ responsibility, because even though they know fast food is unhealthy, they still allow their children to eat it.
Everyone agrees childhood obesity is an important social issue, but it is not clear on who is responsible for this issue. Whether it is parents’ responsibility, fast food restaurant responsibility, or the schools’ responsibility is the question that people often argue over. Each side has their own contentions. People argue that fast food stores purposefully target children for advertising in order to gain profit. On the other hand, some people think it is the parents’ responsibility to control their children’s eating behaviors and habits. Also, the schools have the responsibility for children obesity too. Because the schools slashed education funding of physical education, fewer than 25 percent of students in the state could achieve four out of five fitness standards (Marks).
One thing they both sides agree on, though, is that this is a growing issue that needs to be solved in order to ensure children live long healthy lives.
This issue started around the 1980s and has been a growing epidemic for about 34 years now. From fast food to electronics, quick and easy is the reality for many people. However, some children are growing overweight, and unhealthy. Their weights become a healthy issue, and soon they are limited on eating. In 1977 in Washington DC the 2nd Fogarty International Conference on Obesity was held. Soon after in 1980 Dr. John Brunzell and Dr. George Bray deliberated over the fact that America lacked in having organized groups focusing on obesity. Consequently, in 1982 scientists interested in obesity were invited into the North American Association for the Study of Obesity (NAASO), at Vasser College (“IASO History”).

The book, Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal, published in 2001by Eric Schlosser, a specially describes how a lot of American families spend half of their money in fast food restaurants and how fast food companies market specifically to children. For example, Fast Food Companies invest their businesses at the expense of school funding resulting in a profit gain from students. According to his sources, 80% of sponsored textbooks contain material that is biased in favor of the sponsors, and 30% of high schools offer fast foods in their cafeterias. However, Schlosser also recounts how fast food companies use bad material and steps involved in meat processing, such as they using sick animal meat which introduces harmful bacteria into the food, too many man-made ingredients, and too much calories in food. To sum up, that is a horrible fact that fast food affects childhood obesity.
The obesity is bad for children’s health because they become so overweight it impedes their movement and their growing. It is not only a fact that most kids don’t want to play with obese children, but also they do not have enough energy and a healthy body to play or keep up. The parents and children should fix this problem and stop childhood obesity. If they do not wake up, this will be disastrous for our country. Preventing kids from becoming overweight means adapting the way your family eats and exercises, and how you spend time together. Helping children lead healthy lifestyles begins with parents who lead by example. While guilt and fear are motivators, they have to be used to find with the answer to the situation. More physical activity, breastfeeding, consuming fresh foods, limiting television viewing and decreasing consumption of sugar beverages are all actions that could potentially turn the tide on childhood obesity. There is no mention about what a parent can do other than to say ‘stop sugarcoating the problem’.
I am interested in childhood obesity because I also faced obese problems when I was young. I just ate what I liked to and did not care about my health. However, when I went to school and saw all the skinny pretty girls, I started to realize my obesity issue bothered me. Some children would make fun of me and call me fat nicknames and laugh at me. Some people would say that they were just jokes, but not for me. I did not feel that it was funny; I just felt upset, humiliated and lost my confidence. People did not think jokes between young children mean anything, but on the contrary it hurts obese children’s feelings and affects their lives because no one wants to be a joke. Also, obesity affected my health since my body easily got tired, I could not move swiftly, and often had negative or unhappy thoughts. Every girl likes to dress pretty, same as me, but I couldn’t because of my fat stature, so I could only envy others. Therefore, these children obesity issues that affected me during my childhood has made me want to solve this problem to help to give obese children happy and healthy lives. Also, I saw an obesity advertisement. In the advertisement created by the Stop Childhood Obesity organization, there are big, red, and bold letters that say “warning”. It catches people’s attention and means that its message is a serious matter. Bold text across the page reads “Being fat takes the fun out of being a kid.” The Stop Childhood Obesity organization’s advertisement makes people feel sympathy for the girl and want to stop childhood obesity and also made me.
