Classification is based on many criteria and classifying hotels into different types is not an easy task. Hotels can be classified in various ways and each classification is geared to a specific clientele. Basically, most hotels can be classified base on three factors: the level of service, the length of stay, the ownership.
First, in the level of service, hotels are classified into economy, mid-range and luxury hotels service on which they offer. With economy service, hotels meet the basic need of the guest by providing comfortable and clean, inexpensive room. Economy hotels appeal primarily to budget minded travelers who wants a room with minimum services and amenities required for comfortable stay, without unnecessary paying additional cost for costly services. The cliental of these hotels include families with children, travelling business people, backpackers, vacationer retirees etc. They might not offer food and beverage facilities. The hotels of this level normally have been classed from 1 star down. With mid-range service, these hotels appeal the largest segment of the travelling public. They do not provide elaborate service and have an adequate staffing. It is suite hotel that offers small living room with appropriate furniture and small bed room with king sized bed. They also provide uniformed service, food and beverage room service, in room entertainment’s and also Wi-Fi. Property may offer a specialized restaurant, coffee shop and lounge that cater to visitors as well as hotel guests.

The type of guests who like to stay at these hotels are business people, individual travelers, and families. Rates are lower than luxury hotels as they provide fewer services, smaller rooms and a smaller range of facilities and recreational activities. The hotels of this level normally have been classed from 2 stars to 3 stars. Luxury hotels – These are also called world class service hotels. In this level, they target top business executives, entertainment celebrities, high- ranking political figures, and wealthy clientele as their primary markets. The hotels of this level normally have been classed from 4 stars up. They provide upscale restaurants and lounges, concierge services and also private dining facilities. Guestrooms are oversized, heated and plush bath towels, large soaps bars, shampoo, shower caps and all amenities. Housekeeping services are given two times a day including turn-down service. Above all luxury hotels give personalized service to the guest and have a relatively high ration of staff members to guests such as Sheraton, New world in Viet Nam etc.
In the second factor, hotels are classified base on the length of stay. They are transient, residential and semi residential hotel depending on the stay of guest. Transient hotels – These are the hotel where guest stays for a day or even less, they are usually five star hotels. The occupancy rate is usually very high. These hotels are situated near airport. Residential hotels – These are the hotel where guest can stay for a minimum period of one month and up to a year. The rent can be paid on monthly or quarterly basis. They provide sitting room, bed room and kitchenette. And semi residential hotels are the hotels which incorporate features of both transient and residential hotels.
Finally, ownership provides another means by which the hotels are classified property. There are two types: individual and chain hotels. Individual or independent hotels do not have identifiable ownership with other properties. That means these properties do not have any relationship to another hotel regarding policies, procedures, marketing or obligations. The advantage of individual property is its autonomy. About the chain hotels, this kind of ownership usually imposes certain minimum standards, rules, policies and procedures to restrict affiliate activities. In general the more centralized the organization the stronger the control over the individual property. Some chains have strong control over the architecture, management and standards of affiliate properties. Others concentrate only on marketing, advertising and central purchasing. Some chain hotels in Vietnam are Hyatt, Sheraton, Chain first Eden hotel etc.
