At the age of three Reginald began learning to play piano. When Reginald was eleven he received a scholarship to the prestigious Royal Academy of music. He studied there for several years, before leaving to pursue his career in music.
In 1961 Reginald began a band named “Bluesology”. The band consisted of Members Reginald Dwight, Elton Dean, and Long John Baldry. “Bluesology” became quite famous in ’65 except in ’68 Reginald broke up the band to start his solo career. Reginald didn’t feel his name was suitable in the music business so he changes his name to Elton John. His new name Elton John came from the first names of his previous band mates Elton Dean and John Baldry from “Bluesology”.
At the start of Elton’s solo career he recorded his first album “Empty Sky.” The album “Empty Sky” was greatly reviewed but was poorly sold. After the album Elton started to regret some things about his past, but his luck changed when Elton released the self-titled album “Elton John.” John has sold more than 250 million records, making him one of the most successful artists of all time. His single in 1997 “Candle in the Wind “, has sold over 37 million copies, becoming the best selling single of all time!
Elton has had more than 50 Top 40 hits, including seven consecutive number 1 US albums, 56 Top 40 singles, 16 Top 10, four number 2 hits, and nine number 1 hits.
