English as an international business language.
The objective and the importance of the present study
This present study is an approach to the language of Business English as the title suggests it. I have presented here, the main aspects of the language of business, aspects that have to be taken into consideration when learning this language for specific purposes.
I have decided to write about this subject because I work in an environment in which I have to use daily my English knowledge, and more important I had to learn how to communicate with people in an elegant and business way.
I think that the subject I have chosen is very useful to people who are interested to start a new carrier, or for anyone who is interested to find a job in a multinational company.
From my point of view I wrote what I considered important, especially composing business messages and writing business letters correctly. The whole purpose of this study is to learn how to communicate clearly and efficiently.
Nowadays if you want to find a decent place to work, basic knowledge of English language are mandatory. I think that I am not wrong when I say that English has become the language of the planet, the first truly global language.

The last chapter expresses a few ideas regarding the importance of business nowadays. Together with the development of the technology appeared the need for a specific language to make possible the communication all over the world.
CHAPTER I – An Introduction to the Language of Business English
The English language of today reflects many centuries of development. The rise of English is a remarkable success story.
Nearly half of all business deals in Europe are conducted in English. It is the language of sports and glamour: the official language of the Olympics and the Miss Universe competition. English is the official voice of the air, of the sea, and of Christianity. Five of the largest broadcasting companies in the world (CBS, NBC, ABC, BBC, and CBC) transmit in English to audiences that can exceed one hundred million.
The pressure to learn English in a business environment is strictly commercial. In business life we are constantly facing situations where we have to make up our minds. New legislation appears and we have to read it, think about it, and decide what to do to comply with the regulations and put the necessary measures in hand.
The chief “subject areas” in the study of Business English are:
Reading and comprehension
Vocabulary
Grammar and syntax
The use of non-language aids to enhance the written words-graphics, statistic, etc.

Language has always been the mirror to society. English of today is no exception. As Emerson once said: “Language is a city, to the building of which every human being brought a stone”.
Chapter II – The Use of Business English in Communication
Oral communication provides the opportunity for feedback. When people communicate orally, they can ask questions and test their understanding of the message. They can share ideas and work together to solve the problems.
Nonetheless, oral communication also has its dangers. Under most circumstances, oral communication occurs spontaneously. You cannot cross out what you just said and start all over.
The first principle of face-to-face communication is detailed preparation.You must know everything about the subject on which you are to address the individual, group or mass meeting. You have to think carefully about the actual presentation.
When you speak in public your diction is very important. You have to pronounce words properly so that everybody understands your message correctly.
Chapter II – The Use of Business English in Communication
Telephone conversations
There are some skills, functions and language features relating to telephoning.
A person who wants to make a telephone call has to know a series of things like: requesting, self introducing, checking identity, stating purpose of call and also vocabulary: caller dial, exchange, hold the line.
There must also exist politeness: “Could I speak to… please?”, “Who is calling, please?”.
As I have mentioned before, it is very important how you pronounce words, the stress, intonation, and also the grammar: questions, modals, time prepositions, adverbs, time clauses.
Diction is also very important for the persons who speaks on the telephone. They must pronounce the words as clearly as possible so that the oral communication to be effective.
A person who wants to work as a secretary or as an assistant manager must be very well trained. That person must know to take or leave messages, to offer and ask for information (clarifying, repeating, rephrasing, requesting, repetition), to make complaints (starting dissatisfaction, apologizing, requesting, demanding, promising action) and to finish the call (confirming, checking, negotiating, end of call, saying goodbye).

Chapter II – The Use of Business English in Communication
Written Communication
Written communication is a powerful tool in business.
For written communication in business, people need to know Business English, a language which is composed of words and grammar. In order to have a clear communication, even in writing, we should use short sentences.
These are used to express rapidity of event or movement; to build up tension; to sum up an argument; in definitions. The number of words in a sentence must not exceed 30. Long sentences are bad for business letters because they are harder to understand than short ones.
Punctuation is also an essential part of writing.
The dictionary explains “to punctuate” as follows: to separate into sentences, clauses, etc., by periods, commas, colons, etc.; to emphasize in some significant manner; to interrupt at intervals.
Punctuation, therefore, is the art or system of separating written words by the use of punctuation marks: the period, comma, colon, semicolon, etc.
Chapter III – Use of Business Language in Public Relations
When you work in a business environmet it is very important to compose well-organised messages, where all the information is related to a clear subject and purpose, the ideas are presented in logical order, and all the necessary information is included.
Good organisation is important because it makes the message more effective and simplifies the communicator’s job.
Organising a message requires grouping ideas and deciding on the order of their presentation. Direct and indirect order are the two basic organisational approaches.
The direct approach presents the main idea first; the indirect approach presents the main idea later.
The indirect approach is best for people who are likely to react with scepticism or hostility to the message, but the direct approach is best in most other cases.

Chapter III – Use of Business Language in Public Relations
Writing business letters:
In writing a letter it is important to be brief, positive, to write simply and to be courteous. It is also important to summarise the matter in the final paragraph. Generally speaking, a final paragraph that shows the way ahead leaves your correspondent with a clear guideline for the future.
There are some special types of business letter such as: standard form letters, quick-reply letters, circulars, order letters, letter of complaint, requests for payment, status inquiry, letters of reference, letters of introduction, letters of application, curriculum vitae, or fax.
A letter of application is normally the first introduction to a prospective employer. The letter must therefore be clear and concise, correct and courteous. A letter badly written creates a poor impression; a neat and coherent letter with well-ordered facts is certain to the make a favourable impression.
The letter must contain certain essential facts:
a formal application;
reference to the advertisement;
your age and education;
details of relevant training, with a note of examinations passed;
any previous employment or experience;
your willingness to attend for interview.
If possible it is better to name a referee, giving position and address where necessary; but you must obtain permission before quoting a referee.
Chapter IV – Importance of Business English
Business English is an important subject in its own right and in the last two decades has attracted increasing interest and awareness.
Business English courses are offered by many language schools worldwide (by over 100 schools in the United Kingdom alone); there are more than 150 Business English titles on UK publishers’ lists; examining boards offer Business English examinations;
The Business English Special Interest Group has over 1500 members from around the world. Yet despite this enormous interest, Business English is an area often neglected by linguistic researchers, who prefer to work on other – more easily defined – areas of special English.

George Orwell, the author of Politics and the English language believes in the traditional style of the English language and that there is a definite correlation between language and action. It is the citizens moral responsibility to use the English language with ...
Business English is a very important subject for many businessmen today, because business world developed a lot in the last decades, and more and more people use it to communicate.
FINAL CONCLUSIONS
The need to communicate today requires an adequate language. A language that should be understood all over the world.
The English language has gained this status: it is spoken worldwide. Also the need for a clear communication has increased the need for English books and courses. But the English language is not enough for all types of communication, so therefore it has developed a language for specific purposes, and this language is : Business English.
Business English is not a theoretical subject, it is a practical subject. You have to be able to write letters, telegrams, minutes, reports.
You have to be able to speak lucidly in everyday business conversation in the workplace, over the telephone, over the public address system, to the television camera.
Business English is the language of the international business world.
