Fad Diets
No one is happy with their body and there is always something that they would like to tone up or slim down. People in America spend millions of dollars on weight loss programs. Fad diets are different ways of eating a sort of way to be healthier or to lose weight. There are tons of fad diets out there whether low-carbohydrates, low-calorie, or low-fat. Some people would actually lose weight with one of these diets or people would just stick with it for a few weeks, get tired of it, and go back to their normal eating habits. There must be a really good diet out there that can lead to a permanent weight loss.
The aim for Weight Watchers is weight loss. I have heard good results with using weight watchers and apparently a person can lose up to two pounds a week. A weight watchers points plus program recently started in 2010 and it assigns every food a points value, based on its protein, carbohydrate, fat, fiber, calories, and how hard someone works out to work it off (Weight Watchers Diet).
Basically, a person can eat whatever he/she wants based on gender, weight, height, and age. They would give you different menu’s weekly for a typical meal with point values for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For example, eating fruits and vegetables carry zero points, so one can eat as many as they want because they are high in fiber and very filling. Weight watchers is an easy step by step online weight loss plan that a person can manage on their own time and pace. The entire process is based on points and the more weight a person loses, the less points they have because it is being shown that they are eating healthier with including veggies, meat and dairy products, so they are losing weight and of course the person must always keep in track what foods they eat each day (Weight Watchers Diet).

On the weight watchers website, they also have different types of topics and advice on what to eat on a daily basis to help reach your goal. For example, they have breakfast basics as a topic and there are many links to questions and answers about what to eat and what not to eat for a healthy breakfast. Exercise is always encouraged in a diet, at least three times a week to keep up with a healthy lifestyle.
The South Beach Diet isn’t low carbohydrates or low-fat. This diet is a true food lovers diet and is about loving what you eat by learning how to rely on the right carbohydrates and the right fats. These good carbohydrates and right fats are taken in so you can lose weight, lower your cholesterol, reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes, and get rid of cravings without feeling hungry (The South Beach Diet Online).
It is divided into three different phases and after finishing the third phase, apparently you should enjoy a new way of eating for the rest of your life. Phase one- Eliminate cravings and kick start weight loss, phase two- lose steadily, and phase three- maintain for life Phase one only last two weeks and the person taking this diet must eliminates cravings for sugar and refined starches. The purpose of this phase is to stabilize blood sugar, which minimizes cravings (The South Beach Diet Online).
Meals for this diet would include lean protein, high-fiber veggies, reduced fat cheeses, eggs and healthy unsaturated fats such as nuts, seeds, and extra-virgin olive oils. Phase two is the longest phase plan. You will eat all different types of delicious recipe meals and snacks you can choose from as well as dessert given to you. Phase three begins once you have reached your healthy weight and you can continue to follow the principles given to maintain healthy longer life (The South Beach Diet Online).

The Atkins diet involves eating very few to no carbohydrates. It is also called a ketogenic diet which focuses only on protein consumption, meaning the dieter eats nothing with sugar or carbohydrates like bread or fruit (Atkins Diet & Weight Loss Program).
There can be a lot of downfalls in this method leading to medical problems. The dieter using this diet wont be getting their vitamins and nutrients needed as well because they only rely on meat and non-starchy vegetables and all the nutrients wont be provided in the diet which would cause some problems (Atkins Diet & Weight Loss Program).
The Zone Diet is a different approach of a diet for nutrition and health. This diet argues with the Federal Drug Administration’s opinion that Americans should eat a high carb, low protein and fat diet (What Is The Zone Diet?).
This diet can show scientific evidence that an even diet can prevent many diseases and lead to a healthier life style. A small amount of protein is to be eaten at every meal and a snack in the afternoon and evening, favorable carbohydrates such as beans and most fruit must be eaten twice the size of the protein portion, smaller amount of “unfavorable” carbohydrates such as brown rice, bread, bagel etc. and dairy products which are low-fat or no-fat (What Is The Zone Diet?).
A man named Dr. Sears wrote a book on the Zone diet and he claims that this diet is based on 15 years of research in bio nutrition. There are many reviews on this diet, however the diet restricts carbohydrates more than necessary. Although a small piece of protein, and then filling the rest of your plate up with fruits and vegetables seems like a healthy meal.
The Nutri-System diet is a low calorie, balanced diet. NutriSystem has a food delivery component which came to most of the publics attention because dieters can choose each meal from a wide variety menu listed on the website. They also use a prepared and portion-controlled meal as the core of its program. Some pros of this diet is that there are wide menu selections, it is more affordable than other food delivery programs, convenient pre-packaged meals, 4 week supply of meals delivered at a time and regular supporting consultations (Nutrisystem).

This diet seems to be very expensive and the reviews received for this diet seems unsure about health risks and losing the weight with the diet.
Fad diets refer to unusual eating patterns that promote rapid weight loss over a short period. Unfortunately, they usually neglect healthy nutrition and long-term weight maintenance. In my opinion, I believe that none of these diets can lead to a “permanent” weight loss. There are two reasons I believe why and the first one is because it is not possible to stick with them for very long. No one is going to want to stick with eating the same boring foods when once in a while, you would want to eat out or eat different types of desserts each night and that can ruin the diet you were on. The second reason fad diets don’t work long term is because you may potentially return to your former eating habit’s the instant you quit the trend. It is most likely that if you spent two weeks following a fad diet and lost 10 pounds, those 10 pounds are going to come back quickly when you start eating all the unhealthy foods again like fries, burgers, cookies etc. A person dieting would most likely be found eating much more then he/she did before the diet because he/she felt so deprived and overcome with unending longings for all the foods they missed. I would not follow a fad diet and would rather eat healthier and do regular exercise daily to lose weight and raise my metabolism up. Follow the food pyramid by eating different colors (especially with fruits and veggies) and start reading the nutrition facts panel and focus on your daily caloric values and you would be on your way to a healthy lifestyle.
