IB CAS Information
In service to others, in pushing our bodies in creating something
satisfying, we become more than we were. Developing the whole person,
not just the academic mind, is IB philosophy.
All seniors in International High School are required to complete 100 hours of community service. For International Baccalaureate (IB) candidates there is an additional requirement of 50 hours of creativity/action. The 50 additional hours are an IB requirement.
The required 150 hours are to be completed over the course of the students’ junior and senior years. This includes approximately 25 hours of creative activity (including music, theatre, art, design, creating unit for a tutoring lesson), approximately 25 hours of action (including sports, and other activities which are “physical”), and 100 hours of service work. There need not be a perfect balance, just some sort of reasonable combination. Hours must be: (1) not for pay, (2) supervised by an adult over 21 who is not a family member, (3) not part of a credit class for school, with the exception of the IHS community service classes (project).
Contact IHS project teacher with questions.
Students may begin accumulating the 50 creativity and action hours beginning the summer before their junior year.

The 100 hours of community service must be completed between the end of junior year and May of the senior year. One of the goals of community service and career exploration is that students will reach beyond themselves. Therefore, at least 50 hours must be spent in a service organization, activity in the community, or service program in the school. Up to 50 hours may be spent getting experience outside the high school in a field in which the student has a genuine interest.
French Immersion students must complete 60 of the 100 service hours in a setting where French is the primary language being used. FI students may complete 30 of these hours after the end of sophomore year; however, the additional 30 French hours must be earned after the completion of junior year. The remaining 40 hours of service (to reach the total of 100) must be earned between the end of junior year and graduation. Documented French Immersion hours should be turned in to Courtney Leonard.
Spanish Immersion students must complete the 100 service hours in a setting where Spanish is the primary language spoken. SI students may complete 50 of these hours after the end of sophomore year; however, the remaining 50 hours must be completed between the end of junior year and graduation. Documented Spanish Immersion hours should be turned in to Joshua Hamill.

How Do I Document My Hours?
Be sure to fill out the appropriate form for each activity you hope to count. Keep these forms in a folder that you can add to as the year progresses. THIS IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. In May of your senior year you will fill out a CAS summary form, which will be added to your folder and kept on file for IB.
