This day 15th August of every year is a golden day engraved in the history of the world. On the night of August 15, 1947, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru rose to make a maiden speech in New Delhi, “When the world sleeps. India will wake to life and freedom.” Yes, India became free from the bondage of British rule. Our ancestors by achieving independence, establishing a Democracy and giving a constitution in January 1950, set us off in the right direction. But somewhere along the line we lost direction. An in-depth soul searching and analysis of our achievements till date reveals that we drifted away from the goals and duties entrusted upon us. We have miserably failed to realize the dreams envisioned for us by our ancestors. WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN, SECULAR and DEMOCRATic country with JUSTICE ,LIBERTY EQUALITY and to promote among them all FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the nation.
We must honestly reply whether the above said condition is prevailing???
How can we call ourselves SOVEREIGN & SECULAR when we have ceded territories to other countries after independence, when our citizens are constant victims of cross border terrorism, when there are regular incidents like Godhra Riots & burning of Sabarmati Express, When Pundits of Kashmir live like refugees in their own country?

The bottom line is that we have failed to achieve any of the objectives of our constitution even after the passage of half a century of independence. The problems in India (corruption, red tape, terrorism etc…) have remained the same since the first breath of independence. we have continued to elect the same representatives over and over again. Inarguably Our healthy liberal democracy remains the best system of governance but invariably the governance ends up in the hands of few people who turn out to be non-performers. We keep hearing “corruption everywhere… Who will save us from this corruption…………….Politician? But we need to understand that at the end of the day, it is us as an individual who is responsible.
It is said that the real strength of a nation depends not so much on its natural resources not on its uniformed men and not on its military capabilities also. But rather on its students. They constitute the backbone of a nation as well as the pillar on which the national edifice is built. They are the real wealth of a nation.
They are the guardians of freedom, justice, equality, ethics and social equilibrium. They have tremendous responsibility to see that injustice, inequality, oppression; exploitation, corruption, misuse of public money etc. are done away with.
But, at the present scenario Students have been indulging in acts of indiscipline and rowdyism in different universities, colleges and schools. This shows that the student-power is being misused for destructive purposes. In fact, students lack proper guidance and good leadership. There is no one to tell them how they should use their energies for constructive purposes. Students played a crucial role during the pre-Independence era under the able leadership of leaders and there is no reason why they cannot play the same role in the post-Independence era for the betterment of the country and its people
If there is a constrictive and healthy leadership, students’ power can be utilized for bringing about social, economic and political reforms in the country.
If the students respond to their duty towards their country, there is no doubt that they will become worthy citizens of a worthy country. There are a number of ways in which students can serve their country. First, students should inculcate in them the spirit of discipline. No nation can progress without discipline. If countries like U.S.A., U.K., Germany, France and Japan have become advanced countries, it is all due to the perfect discipline of their people.

They have the great potential to make or break a nation. That is why every nation gives a lot of importance to students and their proper development. Students constitute the greatest asset of a nation.
The students of today are the citizens of tomorrow. Thus the India of tomorrow belongs to the students. I believe that each and every students can make a difference, reach out and contribute to make the dream of every Indian come true.
