Army Air Defence in the 21st Century
he Corps of Army Air Defence is one of the youngest arms of the Indian Army, which has proved its mettle in the wars fought by the Country. The Corps plays a vital role in the destruction / degradation of the enemy air thereby ensuring defence of vital assets and thus contributes to successful national war waging efforts. The lethality and the severity of the air threat today has increased manifold. This threat perspective has moved beyond its erstwhile scalar dimension of manned aircraft as the main ‘threat vehicle’ including attack helicopters with new players like UAVs, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, precision guided munitions and more, have added new perspective to the aerial offensive capability. This coupled with contemporary and enabling technologies like stealth, soft kill and electronic warfare have revamped the aerial punch into a potent and a viable weapon. Putting up an effective counter to the above threat, not only calls for a family of Ground and Air Based Weapon Systems of matching technologies, but also, demands a continuous cycle of their upgradation and

replacement with concurrent technologies necessary to match the pace of developments in avionics and airborne weapon systems. The modernization road map envisages a vibrant Air Defence force which will be equipped with a range guns and missile systems capable of meeting the challenges posed by the emerging air threat over the next few decades. These weapon systems would be networked on an automated Control and Reporting (C&R) system integrated to the C&R systems of Indian Air Force. Major milestones have already been achieved by the Indian DRDO and international arms industry in the field of modernization of Ground Based Air DefenceNeapon System. The modern Indian Air Defence is envisaged to be equipped with a balanced mix of indigenous as well as foreign origin systems. Towards this end the ‘Second International Seminar on Arrny Air Defence’ is being organized by the Indian Army alongwith the Confederation of Indian Industry on 20 February 2013 at DRDO Bhawan, Dalhousie Road, New Delhi, India

MINISTER OF DEFENCE INDIA MESSAGE

MESSAGE
Wars in recent history have amply shown that successful application of air power can make a decisive impact in the outcome of the conflict. Rapid advances in the field of avionics, emerging cutting-edge technologies, battlefield situational awareness, precision deep strikes and ‘Beyond Visual Range’ capabilities make the air threat extremely potent. Thus, there is a need to maintain a suitable counter capability to negate this threat. I am pleased to see that an important initiative is being taken to bring together experts from within the country and abroad of the Services, DRDO, Defence Production Agencies and the Academia to discuss the multi-dimensional imperatives of Air Defence. I am sure that the proceedings of the Seminar will highlight the significance and relevance of a viable partnership between the Army and Industry in furthering the interests of Ground Based Air Defence. I wish the Corps of Army Air Defence and Cll all the best for a successful conduct of the Second International Seminal on Army Air Defence.

It is a pleasure to learn that the Corps of Army Air Defence and Confederation of Indian Industry are jointly organising the ‘Second International Seminar on Army Air Defence’. Defence of any nation cannot be conceived of, without effectively securing its air frontiers. This can be achieved through well-equipped and technologically-enabled Air Defence. With the rapid advancements in avionics and the severity and lethal weapon systems, the might of air power will only increase in the years to come. This calls for a continuous process of technology upgradation and transformation of the existing ground-based air defence to secure and protect key assets and installations of the nation and our Armed Forces. I am sure that the Seminar will provide an ideal platform to the participants to visualise the way forward, keeping in mind the backdrop of the emerging battlefield scenario. It will enable planners to draw pragmatic timelines for achieving the required modernisation of Air Defence inventory. I wish the Second International Seminar on Army Air Defence the very best and hope that the deliberations will be fruitful. Please accept my best wishes for your future endeavours.

MESSAGE
Keeping in mind the ever evolving air threat and the growing impact of air power on the outcome of conflict, the need for an effective Air Defence capability for land operations cannot be over emphasized. This has become particularly relevant in the current scenario of rapid technological advancements in avionics, stealth technology and precision strike capabilities of multiple aerial threat vehicles. Combat power cannot be sustained without a responsive and contemporary Air Defence. While the severity and lethality of the air threat continues to grow in all its multifarious dimensions, there is a time critical need for modernization of the Corps and upgradation of its existing inventory. The industry has thus an important role in this process and must become the flag bearers of the drive towards self reliance through indigenization and home grown initiatives. The ‘Second International Seminar on Army Air Defence’ aims at identifying specific goals and measures towards technology development and tactical application in order to enable the much needed transformation of Army Air Defence. I wish the event all success.
The Term Paper on Air Force Military Time Living
Nearly 60 Years of Change in the Military (1941 to 2000) I have been in the military for seventeen years and during my tenure there have been countless changes. When I meet a new troop with a fresh attitude I can t help but think of how it was when I first entered the service. More then once I have made the mistake of expressing my thoughts on the change of the military attitude to ex-military. ...

The ‘Second International Seminar on Army Air Defence’, being conducted In concert with the CII, addresses the dual requirement of firstly, examining the future concepts of Ground Based Air Defence and secondly, to provide a base reference and a holistic perception of the overall requirement to the Industry Captains (duly backed by Research & Development and Academia) to take on the challenge of being effective ‘Capability Providers’. The Seminar aims to sensitise the industry both indigenous as well as international, on the specific requirements of Air Defence and to seek their suggestions which would enable preparation of a pragmatic road map for modernization of the Corps of Army Air Defence The event thus provides an excellent meeting ground and a common platform for discussion between the capability seekers and capability providers which will set the pace for identification and operationalisation of appropriate Ground Based Air Defence WeaponSystems in times to come. I am confident that the event will achieve its enshrined objectives and will go a lonq way in enlarging the scope of partnership between the Services and Industry in all spheres of Air Defence activities. I wish the Seminar, a grand success 07 Jan 2013 (Kuldip Singh) Lieutenant General
