Art is the product of life experiences, thoughts beliefs and feelings. Art is a way to express personal ideas and how one interprets life. The Reality can be altered in anyway an artist feels like, they can use art as a way of expressing their inner feelings and make a statement about their views and philosophies on life.
I see the world as a happy, colourful world, as I am bubbly and high spirited person. My art works consist of bright colours, pictures of palm trees, flowers and beach scenery. This is because I was brought up on an island and lived most of my life by the sea. I am still at a very young age and up to now have not experienced a lot of life changing situations. My artworks to date are reflections of my happy memories of living on an island and are bright and tropical in the themes. The medium that I like to work with is a combination of acrylic on very large canvas.
Various artists are relevant to me in the ways that they create their art and have had a major influence and inspiration to my style of art. Georgia O’Keefe is probably the one I relate to the most as we both use the element of abstraction, surrealism using bright colours. O’Keefe’s main subjects are flowers and close ups of nature and these are the subjects that I enjoy the most.
Other artists that have influence my art style are Picasso, Van Gogh, Pollock and Warhol. Picasso uses the weird shapes and disfigurements in normal life objects which I commonly use. Van Gogh uses the subject of flowers especially sunflowers and expresses the way he paints emotionally where a simple subject can mean so much. This is relevant to me as my main themes in art centre around painting flowers. I have also seen and held an original Van Gogh and this has been a big inspiration to my art. Pollock uses a unique style of art, he is known for using abstract expressionism. Having the freedom to express himself dynamically by emotionally splattering while painting, enclosed in his own world. This is relevant to me as I like to enclose myself and be free to create my abstract artworks from my feeling at that time. Andy Warhol uses the outrageous daring style of art that intimidates other artists. He is well known for ‘pop art’ which makes statements about his beliefs and values, trying to express his personal ideas in his art work while making a statement about his philosophies. This is similar to what I do in my art work as I tend to reflect my current feelings and attitudes, not worrying what other people think, but what pleases me.
Art Review of Artist Cai Guo-Qiang
I chose to do my art review on the artist Cai Guo-Qiang, who is a Chinese artist who does most of his art in the form of explosions and large scale projects such as this one, which bring attention to problems in society dealing with violence and terrorism. In his piece titled Inopportune: Stage 1, Guo-Qiang displays 9 identical cars, which are tumbling through the air in different positions, with ...
Georgia O’Keefe grew up in a farm house in the South of America and was inspired to paint and draw rural and western style art. She attended boarding school and began to use water colours. Her early work, such as the “Canyon with Crows” 1917 was a water colour on graphite paper, clearly shows her early physical environment and the influence this had on her artwork. Georgia did not care what others thought of her artwork but painted how she saw things. This is seen with her comment: “I have but one desire as a painter – that is to paint what I see, as I see it, in my own way, without regard for the desires or taste of the professional dealer or the professional collector.” (http://www.okeeffemuseum.org/her-art/the-early-years.aspx ).
Georgia changed to oil paints and she produced some of the most remarkable abstractions of her entire career from 1918. This change was due to her growing fascination with Modernistic Photography where her subjects became the main emphasis through increased scale. This is clearly seen with her painting ‘Canna Red on Orange’ 1926, (oil on canvas).
The Essay on Art Work Dali Period Paintings
Visiting the Salvador Dali museum was quite the experience. Although I have been there be for, I got a chance to take my time and really look at each period of Dali's work. Dali is said to have four periods of his art work, which are his early, transitional, surreal, and his classic periods. Even though my favorite is his surreal period I am going to give you a little sample what art work form ...
Over her lifetime, her artwork changes due to her experiences and influences at that period of time in her life. This is seen when she starts off with water colour in her early years, then when she becomes more exposed to the art world and begins to be influenced by other artists, and changes to oil paint. She was heavily influenced and interested in Modernistic photography and started to use large scale art work focusing on the magnification of nature. During this time, Georgia also uses the art element of surrealism; this is evident in one of her famous art work “Mules skull with Pink Poinsettia” – 1936 (oil on canvas) which demonstrates the use of surrealism. This clearly is a product of her life experiences, thoughts, beliefs and feelings.
Surrealism is a cultural movement that began in the early-1920s, and is best known for the visual artworks and writings of the group members. Surrealist works feature the element of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and non sequitur ( non sequitur:- is a comment which, due to its lack of meaning relative to the comment it follows, is absurd to the point of being humorous or confusing); however many Surrealist artists and writers regard their work as an expression of the philosophical movement first and foremost, with the works being an artifact. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surrealism) A lot of my artwork does contain an element of Surrealism as I enjoy the element of surprise and as an expression of my philosophies and experiences in life. Georgia’s work is similar and most relevant to me in her chosen subject matter;, media and style, as she uses bold colours, close ups of nature, abstraction and surrealism.
The way that Van Gogh creates his art work is similar to my style of painting in that he likes to use bold bright colours and to paint flowers. This is seen in his art piece “Three sunflowers in a vase” – August 1888- ,oil on canvas. Van Gogh’s paintings of sunflowers have altered mankind’s perspective of art and life. These paintings captivate the mind and leave you astounded in their simplistic beauty. The flowing wilted stems and the burst of lovely yellow, draws ones attention around the painting without disrupting the balance of the piece. By using similar techniques such as colouring, shading and tones, I find that both he and I share the same elements in creating art. Van Gogh is a pioneer of what came to be known as Expressionism which is the tendency of an artist to distort reality for an emotional effect; it is a subjective art form. (wikipedia).
The Essay on Does Having a Recognizable Art or Design “Style” Limit One’s Creativity?
In order to touch basis on what everything truly is and get a solid meaning, let’s discuss what an art style really is, “..Art styles describe the way the artwork looks. Style is basically the manner in which the artist portrays his or her subject matter and how the artist expresses his or her vision. Style is determined by the characteristics that describe the artwork, such as the way the artist ...
I often use expressionism in my artwork. My art is an expression of my emotions at the time of painting.
Pablo Picasso he is best known for co-founding the Cubist movement and for the wide variety of styles embodied in his work. In cubist artworks, objects are broken up, analyzed, and re-assembled in an abstracted form. Instead of depicting objects from one viewpoint, the artist depicts the subject from a multitude of viewpoints to represent the subject in a greater context. Often the surfaces intersect at seemingly random angles, removing a coherent sense of depth. The background and object planes interpenetrate one another to create the shallow ambiguous space, one of cubism’s distinct characteristics. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cubist).
Some of my artwork involves the cubist method. When I create my art work, I like to use natural common shapes, such as squares, diamonds and circles. In this it creates somewhat abstraction using cubes; I enjoy the pulling apart of the images and re-arranging them in an altered manner.
Picasso can interpret something so simple and produce it into a more sophisticated art piece. This is also something that I like to do. In the “Nude and still life” 1931, oil on canvas, Picasso uses very simple colours such as yellow, blue and green. This art work may look very simple and bland, but to him it is a masterpiece. All it needs is time and attention to truly understand the painting. To a casual viewer, his art work looks like it was done by a child and view it as just bright colourful shapes painted in. This is reality distorted by the eyes of the artist. But this is what his trying to bring across, though it may seem non genius and bland, it doesn’t mean that it is artistic. Though it may not seem like a nude painting to the naked eye, Picasso interprets the true meaning through making it not the main subject.
The Term Paper on Art Theories and Influence on Artists
Practice in art refers to the decisions and actions that affect choices, perceptions, ways of working and views of an artist or art historian. Tim Storrier sums up the practice of an artist by saying that “A painting is really a graphic illustration of where a particular artist is at that point in his life and the art encompasses what the artist has gone through in their life.” On art historians ...
Andy Warhol uses his art work to bring out a message and make a statement. For example he uses the repetition of Campbell soup cans in his art work: “ 100 cans” 1962, oil on canvas. This could give off the impression that today’s society couldn’t live without order and patterns, meaning that in grocery stores things must be stacked in same categories and evenly spread. This is evident in Warhol’s art work in repeating something over and over again, giving out a message and making a clear and loud statement. This is also relevant to me as I tend to want to make a statement when I create my art. I tend to be bold and not conform to what would normally be expected.
Jackson Pollock was an influential American painter and a major force in the abstract expressionist movement. This is a style of painting that combines abstract form and expressionist emotional value. It started in the mid 1940’s in New York but its influence comes much earlier from Surrealism and Cubism. It is often considered America’s most important contribution to Modernism (wikipedia).
Pollock is similar to my style of painting in that his work was large in scale, loud in colour, and free-flowing. Pollock’s style is clearly seen in ‘Blue Poles: Number 11’, 1952, enamel and aluminium paint with glass on canvas. I love large scale that are loud and colourful and free flowing.
The work and techniques of the artists O’Keefe, Picasso, Van Gogh, Warhol and Pollock have inspired and influenced my developing art style. These artists use a variety of media and styles ranging from abstractions, surrealism, expressionism, cubism and modernism.
Art is complex and ever changing and artist’s ideas, their beliefs and experiences in their physical world, including what they are exposed to, inspired and influenced by, as well as their concept of reality are all conveyed through their artwork. The artists changing philosophies are expressed through their body of art over their lifetime. My art style and body of work is reflective and influenced by these artists, especially Georgia O’Keefe, and as I learn more and am exposed to more styles, artists and life experiences including creating my own philosophies, I am sure that as I grow and mature, my artwork and style will also grow as I interpret reality and express it in my art.
