Social Drama- A Social drama deals with the social relationship between characters. Within the social drama, conflicts and contrasts between the characters personality emerge. What often emerges from these conflicts and contrasts are social changes that frequently question certain morals and deals with the issues of an individual against the rules of society. Such examples of this drama were seen in Barbara Myerhoff’s book “Number Our Days”. The contrast between Anna and Sophee clearly falls under the context of social drama. Social drama can also be found within the book during the graduation ceremony and resignationprocess. After reading the book “Number Our Days”, the theme ‘Social Drama’ was one of the key themes taken away from the book. Myerhoff’s book is a perfect example of exploring the Social dramas within a culture that has to deal with hardships on a daily basis.

Participant- observation – participant observation is a type of research methodology which aims at gaining a close familiarity between a certain group of individuals. This is done by ‘participating’ within the group, joining in on cultural practices and becoming comfortable with those individuals in their natural environment. This type of research was conducted by Barbara Myerhoff on several occasions. A prime example would be in the documentary “Number our days” when she would sit in with the old Jewish community in Venice California. She built a relationship with the members there and was able to congregate and even speak at the meetings, a sign that truly signified that she was part of the cultural environment there.

Rite of passage- In some cultures, a ritual is performed( known as the rite of passage) by an individual when it is time to grow into adulthood from adolescence. For me, being raised in a catholic environment, going to Sunday school and then getting my confirmation in eighth grade could be considered a rite of passage. For Mark Puddington, his rite of passage was probably harder than most peoples. In a documentary we watched in class one day, we learned about a teenager with a wide array of disabilities and his journey to attend and complete his Bar Mitzvah. A Bar Mitzvah for anyone is considered a rite of passage, but taking into account the
circumstances for Mark, his daily struggles that will probably never leave him, this particular Bar Mitzvah definitely stands out as one of the most memorable examples of rite of passages that I’ve seen.
In the book “The Life of Judaism” edited by Harvey Goldberg, chapter four discusses Synagogue life among American Reform Jews. In this chapter, there are several examples of how these American Jews struggle to obtain a certain identity within America. Reform Judaism developed in 19th century Europe as Jews sought to prove they could fit into something besides their accepted society, a society much wider than before. indentifying yourself as a participant would be through social activism within and outside your synagogue. However, sometimes these forms of social activism events were poorly attended. All of this cultivates into a general attitude towards the Jewish tradition. That general attitude would be ambivalence. Often contradictory attitudes towards what the Jewish tradition should be often lead to hostility and confusion among American Reform Jews. For members of the Temple Shalom ( whichsees itself as a modernizing synagogue, open to change and openness in the now and future) there seems to be a struggle and sense of tension between modernity and the traditional practice of Judaism. American Jews today, obviously, are practicing their religion here, but being linked to two identities (being both American and Jewish) clearly, shows the difficulties of dealing with the fact of having two cultural identities.
After I have collected all my observations from the store I would then turn to do some journalism. When leaving the store, I would turn writing all that I have observed and make sure I include every detail. Being a careful observer and writer is what makes an ethnographer excel at their work. If I noticed some sort of common emphasis on a phrase in the language that was
spoken by the employees, I would write it down and make sure I research my observation. Same for anything else that I come to observe, whether it be a similarity in clothing or whatever, it will all be recorded in writing and then researched in hopes to find out what ethnic group runs the store. After extensive observation, writing and research, I would then be extremely confident in finding out which ethnic community resides in this particular part of town. Once that answer is found, it then could lead to even more research and questions. For example, why open up a store in this part of town? Why reside here? Learning from your previous studies and findings can only lead to more opportunity and research. The work of an ethnographer never ends, and in learning from most of the readings and documentaries this semester, it can be a very exciting and rewarding profession.
