In his past Amir did some things that some people see as being unforgivable, although he tried to atone for his sins it still isn’t enough to make up for the mistakes he made in the past. As a child Amir never tried even to talk to Hassan about the incident let alone make up for it. It isn’t just that Amir witnessed the rape of Hassan and didn’t do anything to prevent it it’s the fact that he just stood there and looked on as his friend got raped then he also drove him away so he didn’t have to see him and feel the guilt anymore, even though Hassan had let it go. Hassan thought the world of Amir even though Amir was usually nasty in return. Amir’s efforts to redeem himself are admirable but it’s to late as Hassan is dead. Some things are impossible to forgive and let go, like Amir’s betrayal of Hassan, why didn’t he try and make things right in the winter of 1975.
Amir’s life as a child is sad, sad that he picks on his friend In order to feel good about himself and sad that he is constantly seeking his father’s approval. As a child Hassan and Amir are friends or “playmates” but Amir never refers to Hassan as a friend this demonstrates the difference in social statuses between the two boys. At a young age Amir Notices there are differences between teach other like the fact the Hazara boy, Hassan can’t read and doesn’t go to school. Amir the “upper-class” Pashtun uses these things to makes himself fell good like implying that Hassan is an imbecile. This shows a lack of confidence and the only way he can make himself feel like he is better than is to make him look like a fool. Amir really isn’t a good friend to Hassan at all he treats him like “the family pet” only playing with him when there is nothing better to do, Assef reads Amir like a book in saying this. When the two boys had the encounter with Assef, Amir nearly blurts out “but he’s not my friend, he’s our servant.”
The Essay on What Makes A Good Friend?
It’s common to say that a good friend should be loyal or respectful because those are the first things that come to mind. Are you thinking of those qualities in terms of the friends you have now or because that is what society states makes a good friend. You’ll read it in almost any magazine or newspaper article on the subject. Not too many people actually take time to consider the ...
In the winter of 1975 Amir’s actions are unforgivable, he witness’s one of the greatest sins and simply does nothing to control the outcome. As Amir watches Hassan being raped he worries about the blue kite getting wrecked “I remember the blue kite and Hassan’s pants lying on the ground” by remembering this Amir shows that although he cared for Hassan he was willing to sacrifice him in order to win Baba’s approval (the blue kite) “was Hassan the lamb I had to slaughter.” Although Amir shows guilt he never tries to atone for his act of cowardice instead he tries to make things even by almost forcing Hassan to throw pomegranates at him in order to relieve some of the guilt he is carrying. In the end its all to much for Amir and commits his last act of betrayal and drives him away, as he cant look at him anymore. He does this because he is not a man enough to take responsibility for his actions. He doesn’t only hurt Hassan but he puts baba through grief separating him from his illegitimate son, Hassan and ridding him of his friend, Ali. This act of selfishness is almost as low as the actual witnessing of the rape.
Amir’s journey to make up for his sins and a way to become good again is an adorable act but not worthy of atonement for his past. Amir destroyed the lives of so many on that day that it is impossible to forgive him for his actions. He should have tried to made amends as soon as he committed his act of cowardice even then it is still hard to forgive someone for that level of betrayal. Watching the rape is almost as bad as committing the act, teachers and our parents have told us since a young age that witnessing an act of “bullying” and not doing anything is as bad as being a part of the act. If Amir had said something on the fateful day in 1975 the outcome of their entire lives would have been different.
